Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (May 28, 2024) – Kaleb Johnson stands atop the Huset’s Speedway championship standings following a successful weekend during the Metro Construction Memorial Day Doubleheader presented by DKW Transport.
Johnson placed ninth and fourth, respectively, during the two nights to become one of only two drivers who have earned a top 10 during all three races at the track this season.
“I’m more focused on consistency each and every night,” he said. “I think we’ve started off on a good note. There’s room to grow. We need to get a little better in qualifying, but that comes with more laps.”
Johnson kicked off the doubleheader at the track on Sunday when he qualified seventh quickest in his group. A third-place result in a heat race lined him up 12th in the main event.
“Besides my mistake in the heat race I thought it went all right,” he said. “In the feature we were really good, but I was stuck behind some cars and I was probably too patient. Once I got by them we were able to move forward before the rubber came in.”
Johnson improved his results on Monday when he timed in fourth quickest in his group and advanced from third to second in a heat race. He capped the night by placing fourth in the A Main.
“We qualified good and had a good heat race,” he said. “We had the car a little too snug the first 10 or 15 laps of the feature, but come the last 10 laps we were really good. We’re happy with a top five and rolling the car into the trailer at the end of the weekend.”
Johnson’s only other race of the weekend was on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, where he drove for Dennis Gainey for the first time. He qualified 14th quickest, moved from third to second in a heat race and maneuvered from 12th to ninth in the feature.
“The first night in someone’s car you never know how it’ll go,” Johnson said. “The car had speed, but was a little too tight, especially for qualifying. In the feature we had it a little too good too early and faded a bit at the end. To get a top 10 for the first night out, I was pleased. I’m grateful for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to being back with the team this Friday.”
Johnson will drive for Gainey this Friday at Knoxville Raceway before returning to his race car on Sunday at Huset’s Speedway.
