Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (May 20, 2024) – Kaleb Johnson recorded his season-best result last Sunday during the opening race of the Huset’s Speedway season.
While it ended on a high note, the night didn’t start as strong with a high pill draw for Johnson.
“When you draw a No. 73 out of 75 you’re probably not going to set quick time,” he said. “For how late we went out I thought we laid down a decent lap.”
Johnson was 11th quickest in qualifying and he finished third in a heat race to lock into the 12th starting spot in the main event.
“The important thing was to keep my nose clean,” he said. “We threw some different stuff at the car and figured the track might take rubber at some point. I stayed out of the wrecks and passed people when I could. I found the rubber a few laps sooner than others and was able to use that to my advantage.”
Johnson rallied from 12th to third, which earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
“I made better decisions in the feature than the past two races,” he said. “It helps when you have a good race car underneath you. I was very pleased with that. It was a good night.”
Next up will be a busy weekend with races this Friday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., with the Gunderson Racing Inc. Midwest Sprint Touring Series; Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa; and Sunday and Monday at Huset’s Speedway.
“I sound like a broken record, but we want to roll the car into the trailer each night,” he said. “I don’t know if people realize just how important that is. If we can get some top fives and top 10s that’s a realistic goal results-wise. If we can do that and roll it into the trailer each night we’ll be happy with that.”
