Thiel Wins Cedar Lake in Thriller Fashion
Sanborn, Minnesota's Christopher Thram started off the night by breaking Cedar Lake Speedway’s nearly 20-year-old 410 Sprint Car track record, going a blazing 10.746 seconds around Cedar Lake Speedway. Thram broke Terry McCarl's record of 10.775 seconds, which T-Mac set back on September 11th, 2004.
When the green flag flew at Cedar Lake Speedway, Thram continued what fans thought was his attempt to sweep the night. Tatnell would fall to second, but only momentarily as he would take the lead heading down the back stretch. Tatnell would begin to dance around lap traffic to gain a commanding lead between himself, Thram, Goldesberry, and Blackhurst. It was 14, 24T, 23W, 96, 65 with 20 laps to go. Tatnell’s dance was only stopped when he drew out the red flag in turn four. Tatnell would walk away unharmed. This accident involved multiple of the top competitors.
With the shake up in turn four, it would be Thram, Blackhurst, Goldesberry, Thiel, and Arenz peeking into the top five. We’d push off again with 21 laps to go. On the restart, Blackhurst would begin to hunt down the 24T, but the action was behind them as Thiel would pass Goldesberry for third. We’d draw out a caution for the 199 of Bowers and then one a few laps later for Hartmann.
We would unleash the field once more with 15 down, 15 to go with Thram, Blackhurst, Thiel, Goldesberry, and Arenz fighting for top spots. Thiel would throw a slider into turns three and four to take second from Blackhurst, but only 10 laps remained for Thram. Lap traffic was going to tell the tale, less than a second between the 24T and 73. Thiel would pass the 24T heading into turn 2 and would get the sign on the flagstand for 2 laps to go.
On the final lap, Thiel would throw it into turn 4 and bicycle the entire car leaving room for Thram to strike, but Thiel would carry it back onto two then all four tires to take the win in thrilling fashion at Cedar Lake Speedway.
The Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprints will be back in action Saturday May 11th at Sycamore Speedway. Come on out or watch the action live on Floracing.
