Three divisions will support the thoroughbred 410 sprintcars for the April 20 Sydney International Speedway meeting it was announced today.
Wingless, legend cars and fender benders will join the Sydney International Speedway entertainment ranks in a move Track Manager Garry Willmington said was a win-win for the fans.
“With so many clubs now contacting me almost on a daily basis, we have upped the ante for the remaining summer season meetings, so we are going to accommodate a few extra divisions,” Willmington enthused.
“Right now, the sprintcars are the headliners, but I have just announced that we are also going to run the speedcars at our two final summer season shows… the last show hosting the New South Wales Speedcar Championship, so that is a huge bonus for fans, also.”
Willmington also made mention that the starting time for the remaining three shows may change, with an emphasis on the cooling autumn weather being the main concern.
“We are now entering into winter, and with that, we are talking to the various clubs about starting the meetings earlier… Come 8 pm here in Eastern Creek, the temperature drops dramatically, so we are thinking that this might be a huge benefit for the families who are attending, particularly those families with young children.”
In further news, the announcement that Motorcycling New South Wales and Sydney International Speedway have spoken recently in relation to kick-starting speedway bike racing at the venue, is huge news for those fans of ‘traditional’ speedway, and again, it’s a subject Willmington is very enthusiastic about.
“We are one of the leading nations when it comes to the Speedway Grand Prix series, yet we haven’t seen top level speedway bike racing – nor sidecars racing – in this city for as long as I can remember. We aim to change all that.”
Willmington then added, “We here at Sydney International Speedway want to change the status quo – we can’t just rely on sprintcars anymore – we need to foster all forms of speedway at this venue. It was built to be run as a multi-purpose venue, and we aim to ensure that it is a multi-purpose venue, and a venue ready to host ALL forms of speedway, and that includes bikes.”
Further news on the return of speedway bikes to Sydney will be released in the very near future, but it is an announcement that has proven to be universally popular with fans and all stake-holders in the sport.
“The interest we have had since making that announcement with Motorcycling NSW has been incredible,” Willmington said, “and I know that we are on the right path for securing our future with this news. Our infield bike track is set-up perfectly for this venue, and I can’t wait to see the solos and sidecars in Sydney once again.”
Willmington also made mention that Sydney International Speedway is also keen to run selected meetings throughout the Winter/Spring months on Sunday afternoons, and when dates have been secured a release will follow.
Confirmation on the starting time for the April 20 meeting will be announced shortly.
