Inside Line Promotions – WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (April 15, 2024) – Kaleb Johnson captured a top-10 result during his season opener last Saturday at 34 Raceway.
“The main thing was to knock the rust off and get some laps and start feeling comfortable again,” he said.
Johnson opened the Sprint Invaders show by advancing from sixth to third place in a heat race, which earned a spot into the dash in the third starting position.
“I got next to the leader on the start and he got crossed up and it got me crossed up, which lost me a few spots,” he said. “That gave us an idea on what to do with dirty air in the feature.”
A fifth-place result in the dash started Johnson on the inside of the third row in the A Main.
“I was able to get a good start and pass some cars right away,” he said. “The track was slick and wide. I rolled the bottom and made my way to third. I felt a weird chatter in the rear end and the next thing I knew we blew a tire. We got it changed and I worked my way through the field using the top and bottom as I needed.”
Johnson battled from the back to an eighth-place finish.
“It wasn’t our greatest night, but sometimes in racing stuff happens,” he said. “Overall, I’m pleased even though we had some misfortune.”
Next up for Johnson will be the season opener at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, this Saturday.
“Now that we’ve got a race in I’d like to get more consistent,” he said. “When you race against guys who started in February it makes a huge difference. I need to clean up some mistakes here and there. I’m going in with the mindset of sharpening my skills and trying to get better.”
