Very rarely do we see a sprint car break the 140 mph range. No one denies that they have the ability to, but for the most part the short tracks and track conditions that we see them race on, limit their ability to get the cars over 140-150mph. However, Damion Gardner and Steve “Biggie” Watt are teaming together to try to break in to the 200 mph range!
Gardner and Biggie are teaming together and building a sprint car for the famous speed week at the historic Bonneville Salt Flats in August.
To get an idea of just how impressive this accomplishment will be lets take a look at some poles from last year:
Eldora’s Kings Royal Pole: Craig Dollansky 13.338 – 134.328mph
Knoxville Nationals Pole: Joey Saldana 14.715 – 122.44mph
Remember those are just average mph in a winged sprint car. We are unsure at this time if it will be a winged or non-wing sprinter.
Either way, Gardner was in for the crazy ride as soon as the phone call came in, “When “Biggie” got hold of me and told me about it, I said ‘I’m in,’” he stated. “I said I want to film it and I got in touch with award winning videographers Mike and Tim Truex from Loudpedal productions. They jumped on board and we are going to produce a documentary for TV; “The World’s Fastest Sprint Car.”
“I have been working with Loudpedal for years at Ventura, more recently at Perris Auto Speedway and at tracks up and down the state,” Big Mike said. “For my money, they are just the best sprint car camera team on the west coast and they are perfect for the job. “Poppa Mike” Truex has got the experience and his son Tim has the cutting edge originality. Together they are just a powerful team and I am really stoked to be working with them on this project.”
Our friends at Loudpedal productions have already started filming the documentary and like Gardner were on board as soon as they heard about the project, “We were at the Chili Bowl and “Biggie” told me they were going to try and set a land speed record and they wanted us to tape it,” Mike Truex said over the telephone last Friday. “I was blown away. It is such an out of the box project for an open wheel driver. We are very excited to sign on with a project of this magnitude.”
Do you think they will break the 200mph range? How fast will they actually go over the course of five miles? Leave us a comment below with your opinion.
