Matt Covington Racing, Glenpool, Ok (March 20th, 2024) – With the ASCS National Tour opener rained out, Matt Covington and team swapped out the 360 for a 410 to run with the NOS Energy World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series last weekend during the Texas Two-Step at Cotton Bowl Speedway.
"It was a big learning experience," Matt said. "For running with the Outlaws, I feel like we had a good weekend and gained a lot of knowledge moving forward. I haven’t run a 410 car but a handful of times over the last couple years."
Covington qualified 17th on Friday to kick off the doubleheader. He then finished 4th in the heat race to lock into the night’s A-main.
In the feature, the track was very racy, and Covington battled, fighting in and out of the top 10, eventually coming home 13th aboard his Triple X Chassis/Reece Construction mount.
"We struggled a little bit with racing in dirty air and fighting the car," he said. "We fought a little motor temp issue that was causing it to cool down under yellow and bogged it down some after restarts. When I was running the cushion, I started trying to enter the corner a little lower so we didn’t turn the thing over or get too tight with the loss of torque. It cost us some corner speed when I moved down. We lost a few positions late but came home with a respectable 13th place, with all things considered.
With the threat of rain holding out, Covington returned to the Cotton Bowl oval on Saturday, where he timed in 8th quickest, earned a 4th place finish in the heat and unfortunately, a DNF in the feature.
"In the heat we were good, but had three great cars in front of us. These outlaw guys are tough and go 110% every lap," Covington said. “I was looking forward to the feature and getting another full race in, but, unfortunately, we got caught up in a crash in front of us. Two cars got together, and there wasn't much room for me to go anywhere but between the top car and the wall. That ended our night. We got everything rebuilt and ready to go again with the Outlaws this weekend.”
Covington will try his hand again with the 410 when he takes on the World of Outlaws at the Big O Speedway Friday and Kennedale Speedway Park on Saturday in Texas.
