Tuesdays with TMAC – Much Better Feel!
(Bill W) April 2, 2013 – A trip to Rodney Tiner’s shop rectified issues from the previous weekend for Terry McCarl and the Country Builders Construction #88 team. Overcoming a late qualifying number, the Altoona, Iowa driver was able to climb seven spots come feature time at Merced Speedway with the World of Outlaws. Two more California tracks in Antioch and Calistoga await the WoO this weekend.
TMAC registered 20th quick on the smallest track on the WoO schedule in Merced. “We ran pretty well really,” he says. “We went out late to qualify. I followed the same gear we had last year when we were second quick. I followed the same gear, but this year, it was way too much. Maybe we were too loose, or the track was that much different…I don’t know.”
Starting in row four in his heat, TMAC was able to advance to the sixth and final transfer to the main event. “We did well to get by Jonathan Allard,” he says. “He is good there. That was good, because I didn’t really want to run the B as strong as the field was.”
Last weekend at Stockton and Chico, TMAC had problems with a bar rubbing on the rear-end of the #88. “The car was working well,” he says. “I took it over to Rodney Tiner’s. He got our frame problem from last week fixed. I could tell right away how good the car felt. It definitely wasn’t bound up like it had been.”
Starting 20th in the feature, TMAC started moving forward. “It was kind of tough to pass, but we did well,” he says. “I left the car a little loose. Turns one and two ended up being right around the bottom. I was running the middle and the top of three and four. I was passing a lot of cars up there.”
An incident slowed the defending Knoxville Raceway champion for a time. “(Jac) Haud(enschild) kind of got in the mud, and slid out in front of me,” says TMAC. “I got over the top four and slid into him and knocked my bumper off and the nose wing. It was unfortunate for my buddy Paul Silva and Kyle Larson, who was leading. I think he ran over my bumper while he was leading and that could have cost him the feature.”
TMAC gained most of his ground after the restart. “The car was still good,” he says. “I had to change my driving, because I didn’t really have a nose wing. (Craig) Dollansky had got by me on the incident, and I was able to get back by him on the restart. Other than Larson, who had a flat, we passed everyone. We passed Craig, we passed Haud, we passed Steve Kinser, (Greg) Wilson and (Jason) Meyers. We ran down Cody Darrah at the end. We were going pretty well.”
He would checker 13th. “We needed a yellow at the end, but all in all, the car felt really good again,” says TMAC. “To move up seven spots was a good thing. We were going forward.”
The WoO hits Antioch Speedway on Friday, and Calistoga Speedway on Saturday. “We’re pretty optimistic going into this weekend,” says TMAC. “We have two totally different racetracks. Antioch is a small, sticky joint. Calistoga is a half-mile. We have the best of both worlds. I feel good about it.”

This Month in TMAC History!
On April 11, 2003, TMAC was victorious in the Sprint Invaders Association feature at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa. He bested Mike Trent, Kurt Davis, Tyson Hart and Matt Rogerson. Despite competing in limited action with the series, TMAC set what was then a record with five wins that year. He is still tied for fourth on the all-time series win list with six.
