Matt Covington Racing- Glenpool, Ok. (October 18th, 2023) Matt Covington came home 11th and 2nd during the Winter Nationals this past week with the ASCS National Series at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, closing out the last National points race of the year as well as the last ASCS race at the famed ½ mile. The results also capped off a runner-up finish in the 2023 National points championship.
Friday night, Covington started the night off with second quick time in his qualifying group. This granted him the 3rd starting position in the heat. Covington maintained his spot in the heat on the narrow and fast race track. The heat and qualifying results netted Matt an 8th-place starting position for the feature. With the race underway, Matt was able to work forward on several occasions and make a run into the top-5. Unfortunately, he caught a rut that brought out a late-race caution, forcing Covington to settle for 11th after starting from the back with few laps left to move forward.
On Saturday, the team prepared for night #2 of the Winter Nationals. Covington earned fast-time qualifier in his group and went 4th to 3rd in his heat race, giving him the second starting spot in the feature after the inversion. As the race commenced, Covington worked to pace the leader Sam Hafertepe, but wasn’t afforded many opportunities other than in lap traffic to help close the gap. A late-race restart gave Covington one last chance. However, Sam was too strong in clean air and left Covington to hold on to second and runner-up spot for the feature and championship points battle.
“Friday, we had a fast race car,” Covington commented. “I just made a mistake trying to get around Jason and the speed of corner entry didn’t work out well with the ruts. With the points battle, I was pushing hard and was just going for every chance and point I could get. Saturday was a good night. We were fast but so was Sam, and I just had the car a little snug, which hurt me trying to run him down. Congrats to Sam on the weekend sweep, and also need to give a shout-out to Jason Martin on the championship. We tried to keep it close late in the year, but he won a lot of races and had a great year. Those guys worked hard and deserved the championship. Hopefully, we can battle it out again next year and flip the results. I am looking forward to getting the 410 back in and going back to Devil’s Bowl for some World of Outlaw action this weekend. It’s definitely a shame and heartbreaker to lose one of my favorite tracks.”
Up next for Matt and team is some World of Outlaw action on Friday and Saturday at Devil’s Bowl for the final races ever at the famed ½ mile.
