Tuesdays with TMAC – Victory at Volusia!

(Bill W) February 19, 2013 – Terry McCarl and the TMAC Motorsports #24 team kicked off the season in style beating a tough field to claim the second night of World of Outlaws action at Volusia Speedway Park in Volusia, Florida Saturday night. Things move on to East Bay Raceway Park this weekend for the $10,000 Ronald Laney “King of the 360’s”.

The opening night for the Outlaws came on Friday after two All Star events were rained out. “We were hoping to work some bugs out with the All Stars, but of course, they were rained out,” says TMAC. “We had a new car put together. We lost our brakes the first night, and had a couple gremlins. We got them worked out, no problem.”

TMAC qualified for the main event. “We ran the B and really felt fast,” he says. “We made the show. It was pretty heavy and rough. Starting in the back, we just pulled it in after a lap and lived to fight another day.”

Saturday dawned and things started well with a heat race win. “We qualified well (13th) and started up front in the heat,” says TMAC. “(Craig) Dollansky is one of the fastest guys at Volusia, and we had a restart with him beside us, and we were able to pull away. I knew we were pretty fast.”

TMAC would run second in the Dash. “The track was slick to the cushion, and was pretty racy,” he says. “You could run all over. It was a pretty good racetrack. (Steve) Kinser beat me at the start of the Dash. A couple of my guys thought I did that on purpose so I could run second and start outside in the feature, but I definitely wasn’t doing that. I try to win every time out.”

Starting outside row one in the feature, TMAC won the start and led the distance, though there was plenty of competition. “I was able to get in front of (Kinser), and the car felt pretty good,” he says. “I knew when I got to traffic, that I had to see what I could and couldn’t do, but I wasn’t too concerned. There was a yellow late in the race, and Daryn (Pittman) was right there with me.”

Things went smoothly until TMAC jumped the cushion, but he was able to hold on for the $10,000 score. “I broke the bottom of the Jacob’s ladder and things got a little wild,” he says. “I couldn’t get through one and two without slowing down. I saw the five to go and the two to go, and I was just trying to keep Daryn behind me. It ended up working out.”

Undoubtedly, Florida Speedweeks draw a strong cast of drivers. “Volusia is always tough,” says TMAC. “I don’t know how many teams were there, but it seems all of them are capable of winning. It may be the second toughest event really, next to the Knoxville Nationals. Everyone is starting with fresh cars and fresh engines there. We were really happy to win…especially there.”

With plenty of big teams in attendance, TMAC was especially proud of the effort. “We had RJ Johnson and Carson McCarl and Lori for a crew,” he says. “We have a nice trailer, but we just have one 410 motor and one 360. It was kind of like a David vs. Goliath thing. I’m just really proud of the whole deal.”

The “King of the 360’s” runs Thursday through Saturday at East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa. “I always look forward to East Bay,” says TMAC. “We’d like to get another big win before we head west. The friends we have down here are great, and I have shorts on right now too! East Bay generally has been really racy, and we’ve been really successful there, maybe more than anyone. We’re looking forward to it.”

Today in TMAC History!

February 19 marks the 25th Anniversary of TMAC running at the historic Ascot Park Speedway in Gardena, California. The year was 1988 and the race was a World of Outlaws preliminary feature. Jack Hewitt won the show in Darryl Saucier and Ron Pack’s #4a. He was followed by Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Mark Kinser in the Reid #6r and Bobby Allen.

Despite suffering a 22nd place DNF in his father’s #7x, TMAC remembers Ascot well. “I remember that as about a week before Baylands where Hewitt and I got in the fistfight in his book (Hewitt’s Law co-authored by Dave Argabright). We’ve been buddies ever since! I remember Ascot as a place I was just starting to figure out as it was closing. It was an awesome location, and a really great non-wing track. They tried to emulate it with the way they built Perris. It was a bit of a paperclip that forced you to pitch it sideways without the wing. The very last WoO show there (1990), we were running in the top ten and broke a rocker arm. That was rough.”
