Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 18, 2023) – Kaleb Johnson put himself in contention last Friday during a preliminary night at the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.

Johnson set quick time in his group and advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race to kick off his preliminary night at the ASCS National Tour marquee event hosted by Lucas Oil Speedway.

“We were pretty good,” he said. “We had a good qualifying run and we were solid in a heat race.”

Johnson lined up on the outside of the second row in the main event.

“The first couple of laps I fell to fifth and then passed a couple of guys,” he said. “I was running third most of the race. We got into traffic. I got close to Jake Bubak for second. I went to the top around Lap 13 going into turn three. A lapped car spun in front of me and a few other cars. I had nowhere to go and clobbered him.”

The crash resulted in a damaged race car and Johnson restarting at the tail of the field. He salvaged a 15th-place result.

“It bent the frame a little bit, but I stayed out there,” he said. “The handling wasn’t too great after that.”

With the event finale being postponed from Saturday to Sunday because of rain Johnson made the decision to head home.

“Just having to drive that far home and with work commitments it didn’t work out, but we’re looking forward to going back to the event in the future,” he said.
