PETERSEN MEDIA: Continuing a stretch of Midget races with the Keith Kunz Motorsports team, Ryan Timms had an extremely fast racecar with the Xtreme Outlaws Midgets that saw him hurt an engine while leading on Friday night before tallying a second-place finish on Saturday night.
“We were really fast all weekend,” Ryan Timms said. “Friday night started out really well. We set a new track record and led from the start of the race until lap 23 when something punctured the oil tank, and it ran the engine out of oil and ultimately caused it to blow up.”
Checking in for the first of a two-day visit in Davenport, IA, Ryan Timms got off to a red-hot start as he timed the JBL backed No. 67 in fastest in qualifying and established a new track record at the speedway in doing so.
Lining up fourth in his heat race, the Oklahoma City, OK driver continued to flex his muscle as he surged from his outside second row starting position and powered his way to the heat race lead as he went on to pick up the win.
Putting himself on the pole for the feature event, Timms continued to separate himself from the rest of the field as he jumped to the lead as the green flag was displayed to the field.
Extremely strong out front, Timms clicked off lap after lap as he was masterful through traffic. However, on lap 23 the youngster was forced to pull his entry to the infield and give up the race lead as the powerplant had expired under the hood of his car as debris punctured the oil tank and caused the oil to leak out leading to bigger internal issues.
Getting a fresh engine bolted in for Saturday’s event, Timms again kicked the night off by earning quick time honors before charging from fourth to second in his heat race.
Lining up second on this night, Timms slipped back to fourth in the opening stages of the race but quickly raced back into third.
With most drivers using the bottom, Timms opted to make the top his preferred line and was able to slowly make up ground. Once in third, Timms continued to battle hard as he got into a dog fight for second that saw him go back fourth between second and third for nearly half of the race.
A restart on the 28th lap saw Timms move into second for good as he chased after Gavin Miller who led out front. As Miller got away, Timms capped the weekend off with a second-place finish.
“Saturday night we were good again, but everyone fought over the bottom,” Timms said. “I decided to try and make the top work, and we made some headway, but just ran out of time.”
