Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (Aug. 28, 2023) – Trey Starks captured his fifth feature triumph of the season at Skagit Speedway last Saturday.
Starks set quick time during qualifying before advancing from fourth to second place in a heat race. He finished second in the dash to earn the outside front row starting spot in the main event.
“We drew a late number, but still were able to lay down a good qualifying lap to give us quick time,” he said. “In the heat race we started fourth and got our way to second in the first couple of laps. We had three restarts in a row toward the end. On one of them I got by the leader, but it ended up getting called back because there was a caution before we completed the lap.
“For the dash I pulled the No. 1 to start on the pole. I think that’s the first time I’ve done that all year. We led until the last lap when we ran out of fuel. That put us on the outside of the front row of the feature. We got the lead on the initial start and cruised from there. We tried some different things. I tried to set a good pace, but also move around to see how my car was on different parts of the track. The track was physically demanding. There was a big curb toward the middle of the track. You had to be aggressive, but also be careful.”
Starks led the distance to add to his lead in the track’s championship standings. It also provided a boost with a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series tripleheader – the Sage Fruit Skagit Nationals – on tap this Thursday through Saturday.
“It was good to win going into the Outlaws swing and gives us some confidence going into this weekend,” he said. “I want to run up front. I want top fives. We’ve run in the top 10 the last couple of years they’ve come through. I think it’s time to put ourselves up front and in the hunt for a win. I think we can do it. We have to have some things go our way, but I’m excited for the opportunity.”
Starks will also race on Sunday and Monday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash. Monday’s race is with the World of Outlaws.
