Lincoln, IL (July 14th, 2023) - Patrick Bruns bested the best as he picked up his second win of the season with the Midget Auto Racing Association. The 12D would use misfortune to rocket his way to a dominant win in the end.
Eighteen cars signed in ready to go racing on a warm summer evening. Many of the drivers of the Advanced Fastening Supply Badger Midgets made the trip south for what was the first leg of a triple header weekend. Drivers such as Jace Sparks, Daltyn England, and Jedd Ross all filled the pits.
The joint hot-lap and qualifying session was first on track and it was Ross who set the fastest time of the field with a 14.441. Tyler Roth came in second with a 14.464 and Miles Doherty was third with a 14.574 as England and Patrick Bruns rounded out the top five.
Heat races were up next with Simpson Race Products Heat one first. The heat went to the #6B of Mitchell Davis, with Jace Sparks, and Tyler Roth second and third respectively. AgVenture/Wehmeyer Seed Heat two, saw the season opener winner, Bruns, take the win followed by Mark McMahill, and Tim Siner.
John Heitzman and RJ Corson occupied the front row when the green flag flew for the nights A-Main The field would rush into turn one with Corson the leader. McMahill challenged for the lead out of turn four but a red flag would fly. A three car accident involving Kevin Battefeld, Davis, and Sparks would end with Sparks and Battefeld rolling. All drivers involved were okay as the rest of the field refired. Corson got the best restart and was able to build a small gap from the field as McMahill charged to second place. Bruns made his way into third and challenged McMahill for second. The top three battled it out for a handful of laps before McMahill was able to take the lead as Bruns followed him into second and Corson third. The #55 of Chuck Walker made his way past Corson for third on lap ten. Calamity struck for McMahill with five laps left, as he went up in smoke in turns three and four and pulled off, from the lead. Bruns inherited the lead with Walker in second and Davis, after being involved in the lap one melee, up to third. Davis made his way around Walker for second but it wasn't enough, as an eight second gap was enough for Bruns as he claimed his second feature win of the season. Davis brought it home in second and Walker finished third. Corson picked up a fourth place finish, inches ahead of Tyler Roth in fifth.
The Midget Auto Racing Association’s next race is scheduled for July 22nd at Sycamore Speedway. The MARA Midgets will team up with the Advanced Fastening Supply Badger Midgets for a night of racing you won’t want to miss!
