Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (July 4, 2023) – Trey Starks remains undefeated in weekly 410ci winged sprint car shows at Skagit Speedway this season.
Starks recorded his fourth triumph of the season at the dirt track last Saturday to add to his advantage in the championship standings.
The night began with Starks qualifying fourth quickest.
“We were a little off early,” he said. “I think I misjudged on both my qualifying laps. We won the heat race from the pole and everything felt good. We drew the six for the dash. I think I was in second by the second lap after a really good start and then I passed for the lead on the last lap. That set us up great.”
The dash victory gave Starks the pole position for the 30-lap main event.
“The car felt really good,” he said. “We had a red on Lap 1 before we got a lap complete. After that we pretty much went green to checkered. I got the lead early and paced myself. I ran a steady pace and didn’t really see anybody. The white flag came out on Lap 24 and then I saw a flag after that. It turned out there was a miscommunication and the white flag came out five laps early. So the flag I saw the lap after the white flag was the green flag. I think that was the flagman’s way of saying we’re still racing. As a driver you don’t specifically see the checkered flag. The white flag is the important one because it’s the biggest flag that is completely white and the next flag, as long as it isn’t the yellow, is the checkered. We were in traffic so I took another lap and then I took the cool down lap and then I started to roll out of it. I got the sense something was weird as the green lights stayed on. I was idling around at probably three quarters speed trying to figure out what’s going on and I looked at the board and it said 28 laps. Then it dawned on me this race is still going so you better get going. We gassed it back up and finally saw the white and then the checkered. I think a couple of guys closed up on me, but it worked out that we stayed in front.
“No harm, no foul. I’m glad it all worked out. I talked to the flagman after the race and we all make mistakes. It would have been a mess if I had completely lifted or pulled off. It sounds like everybody stayed in line as they were. Other than that it was a smooth feature race for us and was great to get another win.”
Starks is slated to return to Skagit Speedway on July 21-22 before heading to Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., on July 23.
