After showers soaked much of the region Friday night, it was not about to stop the drivers at Can-Am from getting back on track after nearly a month off due to bad weather. Walmart of Evans Mills and Children’s Miracle Network were not only giving away plenty of prizes on the night to race fans, but were also treated to a night of great racing.
Brady Howard has been one of the top runners in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman. He took the lead after early pace setting Dylan Moore had problems on the front end of his car ending his night early. Howard had a fast car but new comer Jake Granacker was making his debut and put the pressure on with Genavieve Bartlett running third. Howard’s bid for three straight wins ended as he slowed off turn 4 with 4 laps left. On the restart Granacker continued to lead but chain reaction contact in turn 1 resulted in Gage Howard spinning out. On the final restart Granacker would hold off a determined Genavieve Bartlett for the win with Gage Howard crossing in third.
The first and only appearance for the Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club saw a battle between two drivers, who were both looking for their second series wins of the season. Jason Riddell led early with Steve Billings second, both drivers had won the opening two races at Brockville and Cornwall, but were looking to get one at Can-Am. The top two drivers were lapping cars in a hurry as behind them Gavin Riddell, Paul Billings and Chad Lackie, were all trying to keep pace. Over the final laps Steve Billings would close in to try and make a race out of it, but Riddell was too strong, scoring his second Can-Am win and second in a row on the series. Greg Hale was strong in the 50s and 60s class as he held off a determined Mason Barkley for his first win of the year and second in a row at Can-Am, ending Barkley’s winning streak in the division.
The 25 lap Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTCar 358 Modified division was set for action and they provided plenty of it. Jordan Kelly took the early lead over Michael Mandigo and Preston Forbes. Kelly had a fast car and was pulling away but the yellow flew as RJ Tressider, made contact with the wall in turn 3. The next restart was similar, as Kelly again pulled away, but Shaun Shaw was on the move taking second from Forbes with Jeff Sykes and Jordan McCreadie now up to the top 5. On lap 12 Ryan Bartlett’s night ended with a broken front end in turn two, but one driver’s night was about to take a drastic turn. On a lap 14 restart Michael Mandigo was battling with Billy Dunn and Derek Webb down the back stretch. Mandigo hooked a wheel catapulting his car into several violent mid-air spins and barrel rolls, eventually coming to rest in a field off the back stretch. Mandigo climbed from his car uninjured and walked back to the pits. The car was destroyed. As the race passed half way, points leader and the man looking for two in a row, Tim Fuller, had quietly moved from 14th to battle for a top 5 spot, but had work to do as Jordan Kelly was driving away from everyone. On lap 17 Preston Forbes’ night ended as he broke while running second. After several quick yellow flags Jordan Kelly continued to lead but Tim Fuller was on a mission. He moved to second around Shaun Shaw, then ran down the leader. With 5 to go Fuller got by Kelly on a restart off turn 2 and would drive away. The two-time and defending track champion was fast on this night scoring his 2nd win in a row and 40th Modified win of his Can-Am career. Jordan Kelly had his best run of the year in second, Jordan McCreadie crossed in third while Lance Willix came from 18th to finish 4th and Shaun Shaw grabbed 5th.
Jamie Brown would pace the field early on in the 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman feature, over Frank Sibley, Jessica Power, Taylor Doxtator and Dustin Hutton. The first yellow flew quickly for Tyler Stevenson, who had smoke coming from his car, as he slowed in turn 3. Brown continued his great drive on the restart, but Jessica Power was making a run to the lead as she took 2nd from Sibley and brought Dave Rogers to third. These two drivers then ran down the leader making a great 3 car battle for the top spot. On lap 7 Rogers was able to get the lead while Brown re-took second from Power, and began to turn in a dominant performance. A quick caution on lap 8 would bunch the field up again for another restart, but Rogers was too strong as he pulled away from the field again with Power taking the second spot back from Brown, with Dustin Hutton and Josh Reome making up the top 5. Over the final laps, Dave Rogers would go unchallenged and make his first Can-Am start of the season a good one, as he scored the win. Jessica Power had a season best second place run with Gavin Eisle coming from 14th to 3rd, while Jamie Brown collected the 4th spot. Josh Reome came from 17th to finish 5th.
Sundance Leisure Thundercars closed out the night for a 15 lap contest and Damien Bechler led early over points leader Francis White, Remington Hamm, Anthony St. Mary Jr. and Jock Symonds. Bechler had a great car but Francis White is on a roll this year as he took the lead away on lap 6 and started to pull away. At the half way point, Tyler Collette rolled over off of turn two bringing out the red flag. On the restart White continued his great drive as he led once again over Bechler and Hamm. After starting the season with a win and two runner up finishes, Francis White would hold off a late race effort by Damien Bechler to grab win number two of the season. Taylor Doxtator came from 15th starting spot to finish 3rd with Remington Hamm and Anthony St. Mary Jr. rounding out the top 5 finishers.
