Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (May 30, 2023) – Kaleb Johnson recorded back-to-back top-five results last weekend to highlight a stretch of four races in four nights.
“We had good speed with our 360 stuff, which is encouraging,” he said. “It’s tough not to look back on the last two nights when we struggled at Huset’s. We have a lot of work to do with our 410 stuff at Huset’s.”
Johnson enjoyed strong performances with the Midwest Power Series and Midwest Sprint Touring Series last Friday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., and Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa. He qualified second quickest in his group, advanced from fourth to second in a heat race and rallied from eighth to fourth in the main event at Jackson Motorplex.
“It was a pretty good night,” he said. “We qualified pretty good. The past couple of years we’ve had a good baseline at Jackson. In the feature I got a terrible start and fell to 13th. Then we got rolling. We lucked into a caution at the end and got by a couple more cars to get into the top five. It was a good fourth-place effort.”
Johnson nearly duplicated his results the ensuing night at Knoxville Raceway, where he set quick time in his group before maneuvering from sixth to fourth in a heat race and from fifth to fourth in the A Main.
“We laid down a good qualifying lap and moved forward in the heat race,” he said. “I struggled for grip in the feature. I tried the top for a while, but it was so slick so I maneuvered myself back to the bottom. I felt we were a little too free and I didn’t have anything for the top three so it was good to get another top five.”
Johnson ventured to Huset’s Speedway for the next two nights with the Buffalo Wild Wings Northern Outlaw Sprint Association. He qualified 13th quickest in his group before ending sixth in both a heat race and the B Main on Sunday, falling two spots shy of making the main event.
“We didn’t get qualified real well both nights,” he said. “The first night the track was a lot drier. I messed up on my second lap and that put us in a hole the rest of the night. I broke the nose wing before the start of the heat race and spun in the B Main. It just wasn’t a good night.”
Johnson timed in ninth quickest in his group to open Monday’s action. A sixth-place run in a heat race was followed by a win in the B Main. Unfortunately, Johnson’s RACEiver wasn’t working properly during the race and he didn’t hear officials call him to the scale.
“The whole B Main it was static,” he said. “They told everybody to go to the scales. I didn’t hear that and went back to my pit area so they disqualified me. It was just a driver mistake and something I will learn from.”
Johnson plans on racing this Saturday at Knoxville Raceway and Sunday at Huset’s Speedway.
