Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (May 15, 2023) – Trey Starks tied a season-best result with a second-place showing last Saturday during the Skagit Speedway season opener.
Starks kicked off his night in a 360ci winged sprint car by setting quick time during qualifying.
“We went out early in qualifying and laid down a good lap to get quick time,” he said. “We were pretty good in the heat to go from fourth to second. We drew the No. 4 for the dash with the top eight redrawing. We got to second on the first lap. I challenged for the lead, but he saw my nose and pulled down where I was running.”
A charge from fourth to second place in both a heat race and the dash lined Starks up on the outside of the front row in the A Main.
“In the feature we had three original starts,” he said. “On the first one they called the polesitter for jumping. On the second we had a good start and had a run on the leader, but a red came out before we completed a lap. On the third start I think he picked up on what I was doing so he took my line away going into turn one, which killed my run. I fell into second and chased for a while.
“We got into traffic about five laps in. That was pretty thick and the track was a little narrow. I got moved up out of the groove, which dropped us to third. We had a red on Lap 7 and two more reds on each ensuing restart. It took a while for the race to develop. We finally got going and nearly ran green to checkered after that with maybe one other caution. In traffic we got back into second and I want to say the last 10 laps or so I was close to the leader, but with moving through traffic there wasn’t enough room to make a move.”
Starks will return to the track this Saturday for the 410ci winged sprint car season opener. He is the defending track champion in the division.
