Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (May 2, 2023) – Trey Starks is looking to rebound in a big way this Saturday during the Skagit Speedway season opener.
Starks heads to the high-banked track in Alger, Wash., as the defending 410ci winged sprint car champion.
“I’m really looking forward to this weekend,” he said. “We have a new car we put together for the 410 class this season. It will be good to be back in the 410 and I’m happy to be returning to Skagit.”
Saturday’s event will also be an opportunity to put a frustrating weekend behind him following a pair of DNFs during the Spring Fling hosted by the Cottage Grove Speedway.
“It was definitely an interesting weekend,” he said. “They ended up doing some extensive track prep so we started pretty late on Friday. It took a while for the track to come in as it was pretty soft.”
Starks qualified fourth quickest and he gained one position in both a heat race – fifth – and the main event – 13th.
“We qualified okay and couldn’t really move in our heat race,” he said. “The first lap of the main I got caught up in a wreck, which pretty much ended our night. We got it patched up, but I pulled off after a couple of laps with a wounded car.”
Starks opened Saturday’s program by setting quick time during qualifying. A fourth-place result in a heat race advanced Starks into the dash.
“Saturday started better,” he said. “We went fifth to third in the dash and that put us starting third in the feature. We got the lead around the five-lap point. A lap or two later we ended up getting wrecked by a lapper while trying to lap some cars. I got by a couple of them and all of a sudden in turn four one drove across our front end, which ended our night.”
Starks was credited with a 14th-place result.
“We had speed so that’s a positive,” he said. “Right now we have a damaged race car we have to repair, but we should be okay by the time we bring the 360 back out.”
