Kaley Gharst – Win at Cedar Lake!

(Bill W) September 14, 2012 – Kaley Gharst picked up another win, this time with the UMSS series at the Cedar Lake Speedway in conjunction with last Saturday night’s Jerry Richert Memorial! The Decatur, Illinois native had planned a weekend of racing with the IRA 410 series, but that was curtailed with motor issues in Superior, Wisconsin. The Scadden Construction #6 team plans to be back in action with the World of Outlaws this weekend in Spencer, Iowa and Spring Valley, Minnesota.

Things were looking good for Kaley in IRA competition at the Superior Speedway Friday night after finishing second in the heat. “Unfortunately, we hurt the motor in the heat race,” he says. “We were supposed to start on the pole of the feature, but the motor problem kept us out.”

The unique UMSS format saw a set of heats and Challenge races. Kaley would win his heat from the pole and win the Challenge race from the sixth starting spot. “We were able to win from the pole in the heat and that set us up for the Challenge race,” he says. “We changed the gear a bit, and changed the fuel to try to get the motor running a little better with the stacks they run. It made a huge difference, and we were able to come up and win that.”

Starting from row four, it only took a handful of laps for the two-time Sprint Invaders champion to take the lead and pull away for victory. “Our good luck saw us draw an eight invert for the feature,” he says. “Someone dropped out, so we started seventh. We pretty much left the car alone from the Challenge race. We just took a little bit of stagger out.”

Kaley has performed well at Cedar Lake in the past and he was on Saturday night as well. “The car was still really good, and we were able to come through there pretty quick,” he says. “The track was really good. It had a good top and bottom. We were going in high and diamonding the corner coming out. We were able to get good runs down the straightaways and get the guys in the corners.”

The motor issue plagued the team as they had planned to run at Huset’s Speedway on Sunday night in a race for $10,000. They would compete with the smaller powerplant and finish 13th. This week they will run at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer on Friday night and at the Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley on Saturday. “We ran there with the 360,” says Kaley. “The motor at Superior was our last 410 motor, until this weekend. We’re looking forward to Spencer and Deer Creek.”
