Wednesdays with Wayne – Out of Dodge!

(Bill W) September 5, 2012 – The Lucas Oil ASCS National Series hit Dodge City Raceway Park last weekend, and driver Wayne Johnson posted a fourth and sixth place finish. Now “Out of Dodge” he will enjoy a rare weekend off of racing. Sitting within striking distance of point leader, Jason Johnson, the Knoxville, Iowa driver will meet back up with the series on Saturday, September 8 at the Dirt Track at Texas Motor Speedway.

Things started Saturday night with the prelim in Dodge City, Kansas. “(Brian) Brown and I started on the front row (Wayne was outside),” says Wayne. “He got the jump on us. We were actually a little better than he was. It was kind of one-lane. I got alongside him on the top coming off of two, and he slid up a bit. After that, I just couldn’t get the momentum to get by him, so I settled for second.”

Starting fifth in the feature event, Wayne would do what he had to do to finish fourth and lock himself into Saturday’s finale. “We were just average,” he says. “We were just kind of riding around. The racetrack was kind of weird. Nobody was super-good. We were running down (third place) Brown there at the end. The closer we got the tighter we got. I was just trying to get locked into Sunday.”

A redraw of three put Wayne inside row two for Saturday’s feature. A good practice session fooled the team into thinking not much was needed in a setup change for the feature. “We went out to hot lap, and we were the fastest car on the watch,” says Wayne. “I thought, ‘Well, we aren’t going to change anything.’ It ended up laying some rubber, and I got too tight. I couldn’t get the thing to roll in the corner.”

The tight conditions proved to be too much for the driver of the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x. “We fell back to sixth,” he says. “It was a pretty uneventful night for us.”

Wayne’s World

Bobby Jones asks: What is your favorite track in Oklahoma?

Wayne Answers: Now that Oklahoma City (State Fair Speedway) is gone, I’d have to say Salina (High Banks). I’m a big track guy normally. I like the speed, and I’ve been very successful there. It’s hard not to like that.
