The roar of fire breathing sprint cars return to the California Mid-Winter Fair for 2 big nights of racing March 10-11, 2023. The Southern California Open Competition Non-Wing Sprint Cars will bring full-size sprint cars to the Fair for the first time in almost 2 decades.
Drivers from throughout Southern California and Arizona will converge on the fairgrounds 1/4-mile oval March 10th with practice and a Dash for Cash. Heat races and a 30-lap main event will be featured March 11th with $5000 going to the winner of the Saturday night finale in the Heritage Foundation event.
Arizona's Shon Deskins earned his first victory at the historic fairgrounds that has seen racing since the 1930's when competition was on a 1-mile track. The track was reduced to a ½ mile in the 1950's and the California Racing Association sanctioned races on it from 1956 to 1983. The track was slimmed to a 3/8's mile in 1984 and recently shaped into a ¼ mile with tight racing at Imperial, which was known as a launching pad to the Indianapolis 500 when such racing heroes as Parnelli Jones, Johnny Rutherford and the Unser brothers all competing here.
Ricky Lewis towing from Indianapolis came from the back of the pack to finish 2nd to Deskins with 2021 Lucas Oil POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprints champion Grant Sexton earning the 3rd podium spot.
The Lucas Oil POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprints will join the Non-Wing Sprint Cars March 10-11; with defending Champion Brent Sexton out to search for a second title in a row. Brent won the October 22nd feature to edge his oldest son Dalton by just 6 points in the season finale. Both Sexton's are expected to be in action along with the youngest of the clan, Grant, who was the 2021 Southwest Lightning Sprint champ.
