Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (April 4, 2023) – David Gravel earned a fourth-place finish each night last weekend during the Texas Outlaw Nationals hosted by Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
The Big Game Motorsports driver continues to lead the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series championship standings – by 26 points – after 10 races.
The Texas Outlaw Nationals started on Friday with Gravel qualifying ninth quickest. He then finished where he started – third – in a heat race to garner the ninth starting position in the A Main. Gravel quickly moved forward a couple of positions in the feature and cracked the top five by the midpoint of the race. He picked up one more position in the final stage to cap the fourth-place outing. The five positions gained were the second most of any driver.
“The first night we didn’t get qualified like we wanted to, but we battled back good and made the most of our night,” he said. “We passed some really competitive cars in the feature.”
Gravel opened Saturday’s program by timing in fifth quickest. A runner-up result in a heat race earned a spot in the dash. Unfortunately, Gravel pulled the highest number – six – to line up last. He ended in that position to start the feature on the outside of the third row.
“We qualified better and got ourselves in the dash,” he said. “We didn’t get the dash draw we wanted, but we passed a couple of guys in the feature. Two top fours on the weekend was good.
“The track conditions have to be great for that place to race good. Some big tracks race good sometimes and sometimes they can be bad at racing. The first night they got the track really good, but the second night it was way too fast. We were happy with how we raced given the cards we were dealt.”
Gravel’s fourth-place run was his ninth top five in a dozen races this season.
Next up for the team will be races this Friday at U.S. 36 Raceway near Osborn, Mo., during the Osborn Sprint Car Showdown and Saturday at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., during the Jason Johnson Classic. Gravel placed fourth in 2020 during his most recent trip to U.S. 36 Raceway and he was third in 2017 during his last visit to 81 Speedway.
“I’m confident going into the two places,” he said. “The Kansas track is different from the last time we were there. At U.S. 36 we’ll see what the track gives us. Weather is always a factor this time of the year. It could be wet and cold and fast or it could be sunny where the track dries out.”
