Back in action at Tulsa Expo Raceway (Tulsa, Okla.) on Wednesday afternoon, Ricky Thornton Jr. hopped behind the wheel of the Johnson Motorsports No. 51R Midget to kick off the 2023 campaign with the 37th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire.
With 79 entries amassed for his qualifying night, Thornton followed up a third-place showing in his heat with a ninth-to-fifth run in his qualifier. Sneaking into his prelim with a third-place finish in his B-Main, Ricky advanced through the field 16 spots in the 30-lapper to register an impressive sixth-place finish.
Back in action on Saturday, Ricky was slated to roll off on the fifth row of his B-Main for one last shot into the 37th annual Chili Bowl Nationals finale. Needing to place seventh or better to make the prestigious 55-lap affair, Thornton fell two spots short of a transfer position with a ninth-place outing.
