OSWEGO, NY (December 19, 2022) - Former Supermodified driver Ron Gapski from Liverpool, NY, passed away on Friday, December 16 at the age of 80.
‘The Gapper,’ who called Brooksville, FL home in recent years, competed at the Speedway for a total of six part-time seasons in 1978, 1979, 1986, 1987, 1988, and finally 1989, when he made his final attempt at qualifying for the International Classic.
After crewing for a number of teams, Gapski initially purchased his own car, which he numbered 51, to try his hand at Supermodified racing in 1978. He returned with the same car in ’79, earning a best finish of 10th place in a June 16th Twin 35.
Shortly thereafter, Jim Groves purchased Nolan Swift’s final 10-pins ride and tabbed Gapski as his driver. Ron made a pair of starts with that car in 1979.
After several years away from Oswego, Gapski would return to finish his Supermodified career with car owner Herm Graf, piloting the C-15 for four-straight part-time seasons in ’86, ’87, ’88, and ’89.
The Oswego Speedway extends our heartfelt condolences to Ron’s wife of more than 25 years, Laurie, and the entire Gapski Family.
