Mark Dobmeier – Huset’s Outlaw Winner!

July 5, 2012 – Mark Dobmeier accomplished something Tuesday he hadn’t done in nearly six years; winning a World of Outlaws ‘A’ Main. This one, however, came with his Lunstra/Dobmeier Motorsports #13, marking the first time this team was in victory lane for an Outlaws ‘A’ Main. Dobmeier dominated lapped traffic of the second half of the race, lapping up to the ninth position, and leading the last 25 laps of 35 lap event.
This WoO win was the second in his career, with the other coming at the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wisconsin aboard the Rush Racing #8 in October of 2006 filling in for Brooke Tatnell. The four-time Huset’s Speedway track champion now has 46 career wins at the 1/3 mile bullring. The win marked the second of the year, and the eighth of the 2012 season. Mark also set quick time for the second time of the year with the Outlaws, becoming just the second driver in their first 34 races to set quick time and win the feature.
“It was just a great night from the get-go in setting quick time,” a smiling Dobmeier said among a throng of fans. “What a team effort this race was. We’ve been having a ton of bad luck and it finally turned around with this win. I had the easy job of going out and racing the car. I can’t say enough about my crew who works their tails off on this car.”
Mark lined up third on the grid for the feature after moving up one spot in the dash. He was patient early, and moved up to the second spot past Craig Dollansky on lap three. The two would work into traffic on lap eight when contact between the two sent Dollansky flipping down the backstretch.
“I was in second there trying to get around Chuck (McGillivrary),” Dobmeier stated. “Chuck is usually on the bottom, but he slid up off of turn two. I was diving to the bottom to go around him and had no idea Craig was there and we made contact. I feel bad for him, but we’ve endured our fair share of bad luck already this year as well.”
It only took a few laps after the restart to get passed race-long leader Ian Madsen. The eventual winning move came on lap eleven on the top of turns one and two. Dobmeier endured a couple of other cautions and red flags, including an open red, and won by over a straightaway much to the pleasure of the capacity crowd.
“What a night,” Dobmeier said in reviewing the win. “We waited to get around Ian as I didn’t want to show him the top was the place to be. Once we got by him it was smooth sailing. I didn’t know we had such a big lead, but the car was just awesome. Again, this goes to my guys who work on this car. We’ve had nothing but bad luck all year, and hopefully this turns this season around going into the Nationals.”
Bad luck plagued the Senske & Son/J&J the two races before that at Knoxville Raceway and the weekly show Sunday night at Huset’s. A blown left rear at Knoxville ruined a great night while Dobmeier was in the second position early in the race. He would rally to finish ninth after starting at the tail, but they lost valuable points with the blown tire. They’ll look to gain back those points for the championship hunt with Twin Features Night this Saturday.
Sunday night at Huset’s summed up how the year had gone to that point at the track. The Right Choice Electric #13 was working his way forward in the feature when contact between the leaders resulted in Dobmeier having nowhere to go. The resulting damage allowed Dobs to get back out, but the car was not fully repaired and resulted in a 13th place finish. The night had started out by charging sixth to first in the heat after being third quick for the 21 car field.
“It seems like it’s something new every week,” a frustrated Dobmeier said. “The bad luck just keeps finding its way to this team. We were going into turn three there and just had nowhere to go as we tried to go low around (a tumbling) Jody (Rosenboom), and his car just continued to come down the hill. We really need to get this monkey off this team’s back.”
A scheduled night off on Friday at River Cities Speedway saw the team make the 10 hour drive from Grand Forks, North Dakota to the Belleville High Banks in Bellville, Kansas for the WoO show. A disappointing lap in time trials meant they would miss the heat race inversion. However, the Big Trucks by Jimco car would make its way forward during the ‘A’ finishing in eighth after starting 14th.
The weekend’s plans are to head to Cedar Lake Speedway on Friday with the Outlaws, Saturday at Knoxville for Twin Features, and then back to Huset’s on Sunday.
