Doug Hammaker Claims Dirty Deeds Dirty 30 Victory at BAPS

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Doug Hammaker expected a fellow competitor to blow by him in the closing stages of Saturday’s Dirty Deeds Repair & Fab Dirty 30 main event at BAPS Motor Speedway.

For most of the 30-Lap 358 Sprint Car main event, Hammaker was the class of the field. He rode unchallenged at the front of the field and appeared to be on cruise control heading into the last 10 circuits.

Then Hammaker, of Grantville, Pa., started to cheat the car a little bit. He wasn’t being conservative ... it was out of necessity. And yet, he still managed to lead every lap and polish off the 358 Sprint Car victory on Brooks Graphix Ladies Night at the speedway.

“The last eight laps, I had zero rear caliper,” Hammaker said. “That’s why I was cheating it going into one and two. Hopefully, I had left-front brake, but I had nothing. I was trying to cheat the track, and I don’t know how far I was ahead. We got lucky.

“We were running Russell’s car with RPM, and that was my cousin’s and uncle’s, and my cousin wanted to go back to racing. What’s funny is that this is a 2005, and we bought it for $500. So, I think it works pretty good.”

Hammaker beat Frankie Herr off the line at the start to grab the top spot. He was setting a blistering pace until it was slowed on Lap 4 when the red flag flew.

A three-car incident occurred in Turn 3. Kyle Denmyer, Justin Foster, and Zach Newlin were involved. Foster and Newlin returned to competition.

The early stages of the event continued to be a challenge. A two-car incident involving Jake Eldreth and Matt Findley occurred on Lap 5. On the restart, a 10-car pile-up took place on the frontstretch, causing another red flag.

Hammaker owned the restart, as he distanced himself from the field by using the high line through the first and second corner. Herr was in tow, with Nash Ely lurking. Kody Hartlaub was also making progress from his seventh-place starting spot.

“One and two was against the fence, and you could carry so much momentum,” Hammaker said. “I saw the bottom was starting to get pretty good with lapped cars, but with the big wings, you get dirty air. You’ve got to pick and choose where you go.

The final stoppage came on the 22nd circuit, when Herr got upside down in Turn 2. Hammaker started to struggle a bit on the restart, but that didn’t stop him from claiming the victory by 1.37 seconds at the finish.

Ely earned the runner-up finish, with Hartlaub taking third. Derek Locke advanced from ninth to fourth, with Chase Gutshall completing the top five.

“The last eight laps, I was just trying to hang on,” Hammaker said. “I didn’t know how close Nash was to me. I was looking for a flyer, but I thought I had pretty good speed through one and two.

“I’ve got to thank Bill Devine and all of those guys. We’ve become good friends with building their 358 motors, and he is the type of guy we need for the 358s. We had 36 cars, and I think the 358s are starting to come back. It’s a good division. I enjoy it.”

In the BAPS Super Sportsman main event, Kenny Edkin drove from ninth to the win in the 25-Lap Feature. It was his fourth win of the season at the speedway.

Paul Miller started on the pole and led the first 12 laps before Matt Ondek surged to the front. Edkin took advantage of a Lap 21-restart and blasted into the lead on the 23rd circuit, leading the rest of the way for the win.

Ondek settled for second, with Russ Mitten charging from 10th to third. Miller stayed in the top five to finish fourth, and John Edkin completed the top five.

Matt Murphy won an intense battle with Kyle Moser and Shawn Shoemaker to claim the 20-Lap Creekside Auto Sales Limited Late Model Feature.

Moser led the first four circuits before Murphy advanced from fifth to the lead. The two drivers traded the lead two more times before Murphy stayed out front on Lap 8.

Shoemaker, who started fifth, slipped by on the 19th lap, but Murphy wasn’t going to be outdone. He wrestled it back on the final lap to close out the hard-fought win. Travis Mease, Jed Latshaw, and Moser completed the top five.

Travis Brown led the final two circuits in the 15-Lap Limited Stock main event. A.J. Hoffner and Brian Racine completed the podium.
