Inside Line Promotions – PORT ROYAL, Pa. (Aug. 22, 2022) – Joey Amantea enjoyed a stout weekend with the Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars, earning a pair of top fives and three top 10s during the tripleheader.
It began last Thursday at Bloomsburg Fairgrounds in Bloomsburg, Pa., where he hustled from eighth to fourth place in a heat race.
“We were super fast right out of the gate,” he said. “I ended up pulling the worst number so I started dead last in the heat race and made it up to fourth. We made the feature inversion and ended up starting third.
“I was boxed in on the bottom. I hit an infield tire one lap. The next lap it was so dusty and I couldn’t see and smoked the turn one wall. I fell back to sixth and made my way back to third. I tracked down the leaders with a bent torque tube, a bent right rear radius rod, no w-link and a deflating left front tire. That gave us a lot of confidence being able to rally like that.”
Amantea’s third-place outing was his second podium of the season at the track.
The team made its debut at Clinton County Speedway in Mill Hall, Pa., on Friday.
“My goal was a podium going into Clinton County and we ended up fifth,” he said. “I think we were second quick in hot laps so we were fast out of the gate. We ended up winning the heat race from sixth. We started fifth in the feature and got the lead on Lap 3. The track was super slick, but it had some grip in it. I ran as hard as I could to get away from second place because I knew Alex (Bright) is really fast on those tracks. A caution came out around Lap 11 and our right rear tire sealed up completely. We were fortunate to hang on to salvage a fifth-place finish.”
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Port Royal Speedway, where Amantea advanced from fifth to third place in a heat race before finishing a career-best eighth in the feature.
“Port Royal has never treated us well and Saturday wasn’t much different,” he said. “In hot laps I went into the corner with what I thought was the right amount of speed and ended up hitting the wall. Then in the heat race there were some guys spinning and we managed to finish third. In the feature we fell back to 10th on the start and crawled our way back to eighth at the finish.”
The solid weekend moved Amantea back to fourth in the USAC East Coast Sprint Cars championship standings.
A pair of micro sprints races fill this weekend’s schedule for Amantea, who plans to race on Friday at Linda’s Speedway in Jonestown, Pa., and Sunday at Spirit Auto Center Speedway in Swedesboro, N.J.
