Mark Dobmeier – Memorial Day Weekend Recap

May 31, 2012 – Mark Dobmeier and the Lunstra/Dobmeier Motorsports #13 were able to get in three of their scheduled four races over the Memorial Day weekend. They were able to get races in at their usual three tracks, including a win at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, NoDak.
The weekend opened up at the home track for “Dynamite” with a third place run his heat after starting back in the ninth position. That set up a ninth place starting position in the ‘A’ for the Senske & Son Transfer J&J #13. A dry and smooth track saw Dobmeier abide his time and eventually take the lead with eight laps to go as he went on to win his fourth win of the year at the track in just four races.
“The track was bone slick, but it didn’t have a bump in the entire track,” stated Dobmeier. “We were able to find a little traction off the top of turns three and four and able to get by Kyle (Fedyk) and cruise to the win from there once we had the lead.”
The team would travel through the night to get to the historic Knoxville Raceway for their weekly program. 23 410s were signed in, but that would negate a disappointing 10th place qualifying effort after going out early. “Right now we are struggling to find it in qualifying at Knoxville, but we feel we are getting closer,” Dobmeier said.
After starting and finishing third in his heat, Dobmeier would miss the feature invert and ended up starting in that 10th starting spot for the feature. He would make a charge all the way up to fourth in his Right Choice Electric rocket late in the race, wishing there would have a few more laps to go when the checkered waved.
“Once the fuel load started to burn off after about six laps, we were on the move,” Dobmeier said. “It may be a little hard to believe, but we were picking guys off on the bottom instead of my usual top line. The bottom really was coming in off the bottom of four in the later stages of the race. We just ran out of time at the end.”
The team was unloaded for a double-header of racing at Huset’s Speedway outside of Brandon, SoDak. on Sunday before storms blew up to the south and ended up getting washed out about an hour before start time.
That meant a special 5pm start time on Memorial Day Monday at the short track after an inch of rain the night before. “Dynamite” would be the first car out for time trials and time in second out of the 18 cars signed in for the night. The heats saw ruts develop in the turns and Dobmeier would have issues trying to avoid hitting them. A sixth place start would see him finish fifth after hitting those ruts more than a couple of times.
Still, he would be able to hit the invert for the ‘A’ and would lineup fifth on the starting grid. The ruts were still in the track after a couple of intermissions to try to fix the track. After falling back early, Dobmeier would surge to a third place finish with a last lap pass by early race leader, Dylan Peterson.
“There wasn’t much the track crew could have done outside of what they did,” Dobmeier stated. “They got an inch of rain the night before, and recently added new dirt. It was one of those tracks were you had to ‘cowboy-up’ with your elbows up! So patience was a virtue while trying to stay fast.”
“We’re looking forward to this weekend and hopefully getting another win or two along the way.” The team will run their usual schedule of River Cities Speedway on Friday, Knoxville Raceway on Saturday, and Huset’s Speedway on Sunday.
2012 STATS: 13 Starts, 4 Wins, 9 Top Fives, 11 Top Tens, 4 Heat Race Wins, Average Finish of 5.00, 55 Cars Passed in A Main Action, and a Plus/Minus of 47 positions.
