MWRA Invades 81 Speedway Saturday!

Park City: North of Wichita located on Broadway or old 81 Highway for the well seasoned set is one of the greatest tracks in Kansas racing history, 81 Speedway, aka Robbins Speedway. For almost 70 years now this Mecca of Speed has conducted weekly racing, while hosting many traveling groups in open wheel and stock car competition. This Saturday, June 25th, the Wholesale Battery USAC MWRA Non Winged Sprint Cars invade this South Central Kansas speed plant for the 3rd year in row.

The first two trips to the Wichita area by the MWRA presented great racing, and memorable performances with Wyatt Burks winning in 2020, and Wesley Smith taking first place honors in 2021 driving for John Helm, after a spirited battle with Luke Howard, and a fast closing Xavier Doney.

“The Sheriff” from Topeka, Kansas, will be back this Saturday running the Wyatt Burks Racing/ Don Rumsey 11w. Burks, the 2020 MWRA Champ, and the all-time winningest driver in the series with 8 victories, will be looking for his first victory in this USAC based club for 2022 after finishing 4th and 3rd in the first two races this season, while running 3rd in the current point standings.
MWRA point leader Xavier Doney, the “X-Man” from Odessa, Missouri, will come back to Wichita driving the Doney/Lawson 74 once again after winning at Valley Speedway this season in MWRA competition. That victory was the teen sensations second in the series after a breakout campaign in 2021 leading to Rookie of the Year honors in the MWRA, and a victory just down the road for Doney at Salina Speedway his first in non winged sprint car competition last year.

Other drivers in contention this Saturday at 81 Speedway will include 2nd place in points Cody Baker from Lone Jack, Missouri. Baker racing the THR/Tribble-Baker Racing 9H has gotten off to fine start in the MWRA for 2022 finishing 2nd and 4th in the first two races, after winning the lid lifter last year at Nevada Speedway. While Brad Wyatt of Kearney, Missouri, driving the Wyatt Racing #41 wrenched by Aaron McDonald currently sits in 5th place points, and will be looking for his first victory in the series in 2022. Wyatt originally from Michigan is a veteran of both pavement and dirt racing in sprints and midgets.

Heading down to Wichita, Gladstone, Missouri’s Chris Parkinson, has been a mainstay in non winged sprint cars for several years. The former WAR champ and 3rd generation driver who recently celebrated his 50th Birthday is showing no signs of slowing down driving his number 65 sprint car to 6th place in points so far in 2022. While his teammate, and ROY Candidate for 2022 Chad Winfrey also of Gladstone is a veteran of many forms of racing including midgets, and currently sits in the top 10 in points.

Zach Clark from Olathe, Kansas, has been on a up swing racing his number 26 non winged sprint. Going down to Wichita Zach currently sits in 7th place in points after finishing in that position in 2021. While Independence, Missouri driver Dakota Earls, the 2020 MWRA Most Improved driver is once again in the top 10 in points in 8th after winning the hard charger award for his performance in a feature event at US 36 during the first weekend of racing. And Tom Curran of Kansas City, Missouri, runs in 9th place in points after he also won the JDL Hard Charger award following his performance the following night at Valley Speedway.

A.J. Gilbert driving the DGR Gilbert Racing 2 from Tonganoxie, Kansas, will be racing against Winfrey, and Parkville, Missouris Justin Johnson in his 27 for a spirited run for ROY honors for the MWRA. Gilbert like Winfrey is a former Valley Speedway Midget Champ and is in the top 10 in points in the MWRA heading down to Wichita. While Cowtown chauffeur and former micro star Spencer Martinez is just outside the top 10 in points so far as he also gets acclimated to driving non winged sprint cars after a solid weekend running with the MWRA before defending home soil this weekend at 81.

Speaking of defending home soil, Jeremy Campbell of Wichita, a veteran of over 20 years of winged and non winged sprint car experience with clubs including the World of Outlaws, is a multi-time track champ at 81 Speedway after moving down from Michigan many seasons back. Always a threat anywhere he races Campbell in his 10c will join seasoned veterans like Buddy Parker of Richmond, Virginia in the Parkinson/Weld Racing 93, and Quinton Benson in his 15b of Sweet Springs, Missouri, Saturday at 81.
