Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (June 22, 2022) – If the $100,000-to-win Huset’s High Bank Nationals finale on Saturday is the main course, the appetizer at Huset’s Speedway was tasty on Wednesday night.
Spencer Bayston kicked off four straight nights of World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series competition at the high-banked oval by outdueling Kasey Kahne in a spirited late-race battle and holding off Carson Macedo in the closing laps to capture the Ace Ready Mix/Myrl & Roy’s presents the World of Outlaws event.
Kahne led the first 16 laps of the 30-lap feature before David Gravel powered into the top spot on the bottom of turns one and two on Lap 17. However, two laps later Gravel got upside down entering turn one while trying to squeeze between a driver he was attempting to put a lap down and the frontstretch wall. That brought out the lone stoppage of the race.
Kahne inherited the lead for the restart and held onto the top spot for the next handful of laps before Bayston pounced. The duo swapped the lead in both turns one and two and in turns three and four on Lap 25 before Bayston took over the point on the ensuing lap.
“That was a battle,” he said. “Right before that red obviously Gravel had gotten by me and Carson had just jumped in front of me. I was happy to start on the bottom on that restart. I just got a good start. My car was really, really good around the bottom. I think better around the bottom than it was really around the top.
“I was kind of pacing (Kahne) around the bottom. I just kinda wanted to wait to see what lapped traffic would do. I know a lot of them were on the bottom. I felt like he was going to have the upper hand. He must have made a mistake over here. I jumped up to take his line away in a hurry. Obviously that was the wrong move because he dropped right back down in front of me. (I thought) just go back to what you were doing and what was working, and that was running around the bottom here at Huset’s.”
Macedo nearly pulled even with Bayston just before the white flag was waved, but traffic halted his momentum and Bayston was able to win by 0.888 seconds for his fourth career World of Outlaws triumph. It marked Bayston’s first-ever victory at Huset’s Speedway.
“It was actually pretty racy for being as narrow as it was,” Macedo said after his runner-up result. “There was two distinct lanes. My car was incredible. I feel really bad for my guys. I feel like they gave me a car to win. I had everything I needed there. I just made some mistakes there.
“It’s hard to say you’re disappointed with second, but I want to win so bad.”
Kahne captured his first career podium result with the World of Outlaws by finishing third.
“I had a great car,” he said. “It was a lot of fun to lead laps and battle with these guys. I just wasn’t as good as I needed to be when I got to the back of the field and lapping. I could get a couple and that was it. Overall, it was a great night. We have a good starting point for the rest of the week.”
Buddy Kofoid placed fourth and James McFadden was fifth.
Logan Schuchart and Donny Schatz each set quick time during their group qualifying. Kahne, Macedo, Schatz and Kofoid posted heat race wins. Thomas Kennedy captured the C Main, Robbie Price won the Last Chance Showdown and Kahne was victorious in the dash.
Thursday marks the opening night of the inaugural Huset’s High Bank Nationals featuring the World of Outlaws. The winner of Round 1 earns $15,000 with Friday’s victor taking home $20,000. Points will be accumulated throughout the two preliminary nights leading into a $100,000-to-win main event on Saturday.
The Nordstrom’s Automotive Late Model Street Stocks joins the racing program on Thursday and Friday.
The gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 7:30 p.m. each night.
Tickets are available at the track as well as online by visiting https://mpv.tickets.com/schedule/?agency=JKMV_PL_MPV&orgid=55369#/?view=list&includePackages=true.
