Minnesota Missile Monday: Racing to Second in Kansas
Washington Speedway; Washington, KS
JayHusker Racing Series
By: Stephanie Sparks
Following the racing action on Friday night, the team decided to make the decision to hold off on driving home and watch the weather with the possibility of racing on Saturday with the JayHusker Racing Series at their event at Washington Speedway in Washington, Kansas. After some morning showers, the skies cleared and racing was on for the evening. The team completed some car maintenance in a Walmart parking lot and finished up at the track.
A light field of only four restricted drivers signed in for competition at Washington Speedway for the second point event of the JayHusker Racing Series. The field consisted of point leader Cale Lagroon, Gavyn “GasMan” Bolt, Kyler Bearce, and KC Sparks.
HEAT:
Sparks drew the pole position for the 10-lap heat race with Lagroon alongside. As the green flew, the front row was in a drag race side by side down the front stretch into the first set of turns. With the momentum of the upper lane, Lagroon pulled to the top spot going down the backstretch. Sparks used the track time to learn from the Kansas driver.
Behind Sparks was Bolt who was searching the track for a closing drive to challenge Sparks for the position. The field raced single file around the track in pursuit of Lagroon. With two laps remaining, Sparks got high on his exit of turn four and tagged the front stretch wall with the right rear but stayed on the throttle and drove away without incident and held onto his second place running position. Langroon easily won the heat with Sparks, Bolt, and Bearce rounding out the heat field.
FEATURE:
With his heat race win, Lagroon earned the pole with Sparks on the outside. As the front row neared the start zone, Lagroon got the jump on Sparks and claimed the lead by the first turn. Sparks stayed ahead of Bolt who was chasing Lagroon on the inside lane.
Bolt closed on the back of Sparks a few times early on but was unable to move up in the running order. The small field quickly strung out single file and clicked off the laps in just two and a half minutes with no cautions. Lagroon claimed the win and increased his lead in the JayHusker Racing Series points battle. Sparks was solidly in second with Bolt and Bearce completing all of the laps.
