Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (April 25, 2022) – Kaleb Johnson is pleased with the speed he showed last Saturday despite an unfortunate ending to the season opener at Knoxville Raceway.
Johnson qualified in the top five and moved forward during his heat race before a storm arrived once the feature started at the half-mile oval, postponing the remainder of the race to a date that hasn’t been announced.
“The main thing was we took a car we’d never raced and it did well,” he said. “We bought it over the winter. It’s pretty much the same as our other two cars, but sometimes you try things with one car and it doesn’t transition. The car was really good and it had good speed.”
Johnson began the night by qualifying fifth quickest.
“The track had plenty of moisture in it,” he said. “I was concerned with getting one good lap in. We were consistent with both of our laps. I missed the bottom a little in turns one and two. If I’d hit it just right – the top six were within a tenth of a second – it probably would have bumped us up from fifth to second or potentially first.
“Then in the heat race we got bottled up going into turn one. Luckily I was able to get by a couple of cars and get to fourth. That put us in a good spot for the feature.”
Johnson ranked fourth in points and lined up on the inside of the second row in the feature following the six-car inversion.
“I got a pretty good start and rolled through the bottom in turns one and two,” he said. “Then as we came out of turn two the red lights came on. We stopped there for a couple of minutes. You could feel the wind pick up and then it went into a straight downpour. At least we know we’ll be in a good starting spot whenever they do the make-up feature.”
Johnson is aiming to compete this Friday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., with the Midwest Sprint Touring Series and Midwest Power Series before returning to Knoxville Raceway on Saturday.
