Inside Line Promotions – PEVELY, Mo. (April 18, 2022) – Derek Hagar logged valuable laps in a 410ci winged sprint car last Saturday at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.
Hagar made his season debut with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series, qualifying 20th quickest to kick off the action at the high-banked oval.
“I feel like we did pretty good,” he said. “Qualifying was probably one of my best deals I’ve had. We were only three or four tenths off so I felt we were competitive. That put us starting fifth in a heat race. I had to try to do something different to stay in the top five and lock into the feature. I was trying to enter the corners above the ruts and turn back across. I could really carry speed down the backstretch and we were able to get ourselves up to third.”
Hagar’s run from fifth to third place in a heat race locked him into the 12th starting spot in the A Main.
“The track kept coming apart and I was pretty tight early with a full fuel load,” he said. “I was trying to hang on. Once we burned off some fuel the car got really good and I was able to get by a couple of cars, but we got lapped. Every car I passed after that didn’t matter because I was a lap down. With about five or six laps to go my car felt like it went away. I couldn’t get ahold of anything in the slick so I pulled in and called it a night.”
Hagar was credited with a 17th-place result.
He plans on returning to 410 sprint car competition this Friday and Saturday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., with the POWRi 410 Outlaw Sprint League. It will mark his 410 winged sprint car debut at the track where he’s been victorious during each of the last seven years.
“I think we’ll be fine,” he said. “We’re taking the 410 car, but we have good enough notes that I think we can make a good outing.”
