In its season opening event, Creek County Speedway welcomed David Chappell as the new promoter who in turn welcomed a hardy crowd as Champ Sprints, A-Modifieds, and Dwarf Cars headlined the night’s races. After hauling in over 200 loads of clay to the Creek County surface, the track provided multi-groove racing from start to finish with every inch of newly laid clay remaining tacky all night.
The night’s feature events began with the A-Modifieds. After a false start by the 52 of Chad Davis and the 501 of Leroy Cook Jr., things were not ready to get smoother as the next attempt yielded a six car pileup that resulted in a red before a lap could be completed. A third attempt was also unsuccessful as fifth starting Matt French began moving his 99 machine to the front only find himself tangled with the 501 of Leroy Cook Jr.
With the green flying on the fourth attempt, the race would run the distance with Chad Davis taking full advantage of his pole starting position. With the left front flying six inches off the ground at all times, the 52 would soon have company in the form of Dena Wilson.
Piloting her 52 into the runner up spot, it was a race to see who could dive their way in and out of lapped traffic with Wilson pulling nearly even with Davis on several occasions but would have to settle for runner up as Chad Davis raced on to victory; lapping up to fifth place.
Mike Duval would maintain his starting position at third while Chris Spencer put on a show. After lapping the field in his B-Feature, the driver of the 8s charged from fifteenth to fourth with the 9x of Roger Sawyer rounding out the top five.
Dwarf Cars followed in the night’s feature events with the 10 of Kevin Brewer jumping from sixth to the lead from the drop of the green.
Going unchallenged for the length of the feature, the race on the track was consistently for the runner up spot as the 88 of Rick Cochran, 03 of Kent Kantor, and 13 of Rick Quinn bounced in and out of lapped cars before the 88 of Cochran was able to secure the spot at the checkered flag.
The 13 of Rick Quinn would find fortune in traffic to claim third as the 03 of Kent Kantor fell back to fourth. The 30 of Mike Evans, who started tenth in the line-up, was able to advance up to round out the top five.
Champ Sprint rounded out the night’s races with lapped traffic playing an intricate role. Working past an opening lap red for the 22 of David Stephenson and a caution on the next attempt for the 16 of Robbie Sherrell, outside front row starting Danny Smith would race his 5$ machine past Colton Brewer’s 77.
Unable to hold off the hard charging 35 of Matt Sherrell on lap three, Brewer would drop to third as Smith would soon find himself with unwanted company as lapped traffic approached; along Sherrell to close in at a rapid pace by lap six.
Working on lap ten, Smith and Sherrell would begin using slower cars as picks with each looking to pin the other. Looking like the 35 had the advantage on lap twelve; Smith would bolt back into the top spot as the two continued their chase in slower traffic. Regaining momentum, Sherrell would get the run needed to pin Smith behind a slower car; taking the lead with sixteen laps complete.
Working on lap eighteen, the red would be displayed as the 77 of Colton Brewer and 7f of Brian McClellnd came together off turn two, resulting in the 77 going end over end. With the field re-fired, it was a walk in the park as the 35 of Sherrell cruised to victory. Danny Smith would finish second with Brian McClelland taking the show position. Kyle Clark would claim fourth with David Dutton rounding out the top five.
Post-race comments by Sherrell revolved around traffic and having to borrow his left rear tire from Smith, “It was tough but I finally found the bottom groove and it seemed faster to me but we caught him and passed him and that was that but I have to give him [Smith] a thanks; he let me borrow a left rear tire because were kinda short on stagger so thanks to him [Smith] we pulled this win off. “
Racing continues at Creek County Speedway this coming Friday April 13, 2012 as A-Modifieds, Dwarf Cars, and Champ Sprints again headline the racing action.
