YORK HAVEN, PA – Russ Mitten had a little extra pressure on his shoulders when he rolled out for the main event at BAPS Motor Speedway.
It’s not just that Mitten is one of the heavy hitters in the BAPS Super Sportsman division or that he won opening day and wanted to keep the momentum rolling. Starting spot made things a little more anxious.
See, Mitten drew the pole for the 25-Lap affair, which meant all eyes were on him to back up his early-season triumph. Lose, and there is extra disappointment by fans and his guys in the pit area.
That didn’t happen. Mitten took care of business at the front of the field on RE Fink and Sons/Musco Light Night, leading every lap and holding off a charging Kenny Edkin over the last couple of laps to remain perfect in 2022 Super Sportsman competition.
“It’s unbelievably important,” Mitten said of starting on the pole and winning. “If you start on the pole and don’t win, everybody knows. Even if you finish second, you didn’t win. If you start mid-pack and win or finish second, people don’t notice.
“All eyes are on that front row. Sometimes you get the jump on the start, sometimes you don’t. You don’t get a lot of opportunities once we start handicap racing to start on the front row, so you better take advantage of it when you do.”
It didn’t help that Mitten had an interesting opening lap, when he tried to get the jump on Jay Fannasy and plowed into Turn 1.
Mitten got in front of Fannasy and went to the top. His car continued to slide, but he still managed to gather his machine and stay in front of the field to lead the first circuit.
“Last time we raced, it was top dominant,” Mitten said. “This time, it was bottom dominant. I figured out the first lap where I needed to be. I went in there on the top and slid forever. It felt like I was going to slide to York.
“I got to the bottom the next lap, and I just never left it. There were a couple of times through the race I got tight. I don’t know if it's getting a lot of heat in the tires or what, but when the tires were cold, I felt better.”
The tires remained cold throughout the early stages of the race. Five cautions took place in the first nine laps, which led to a fuel stop. It allowed seventh-place starter Kenny Edkin to advance from seventh to second in the running order.
There were only three cautions over the rest of the event. Mitten built a three-second advantage at one point, but as his tires heated up and he slowed down, Edkin was able to close with five laps to go.
Edkin got a clear shot at stealing the win after the final caution on Lap 23 when Shane McConnell spun in Turn 2. Mitten’s tires cooled down, and he was able to drive away to the victory by .556 seconds.
“As much as I wanted to finish up those last two laps, I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Mitten said. “So, I wasn’t too upset when the yellow came out with two to go, but I wanted it to get over.
“Everybody is here tonight and then some. It’s a good start to the year, and I’m not going to let up. When we do start handicap racing, I’m here to win. That’s the mindset I’m in for the year, and we will see where it goes.”
Edkin came home second, with Luke Deatrick placing third. Scott Dellinger started sixth and finished fourth, and Troy Rhome completed the top five.
Mike Schane shined in FXG Sign Label/Dickey’s Barbecue 602 Modified action, leading the final 24 laps of the 25-Lap A-Main to claim the victory.
Rick Wagner Jr. started on the pole and led the first lap. Schane, who started fifth, carved his way to the front in a hurry and took the lead on Lap 2. He cruised the rest of the way in the non-stop event.
Steve Davis advanced from ninth to second in the final rundown. Ray Woodall, Wegner, and Joseph Brown completed the top five.
In Gene Latta Ford Central PA Legends action, Jorjie Sweger won a fierce battle with Bob Stough to earn the victory in the 15-Lap feature.
Mike Racine led the opening four laps before Stough took over. Any chance Racine had of winning ended on a Lap 10 restart when he spun in Turn 2.
Sweger led the 10th circuit but lost it to Stough on Lap 11. She assumed the lead one lap later when Stough spun in Turn 4.
With Stough out of the way, she took the win by .329 seconds over Wes Alleman. Justin Wagaman, Shaun Abney, and Preston Alleman completed the top five.
Patrick McClane led every lap of the Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature. In the Scramble Car main event, Roy Denike took top honors over Julio Perez.
