The 2022 season kicked off in a big way here at 81 Speedway. A total of 95 cars signed in for action, and in the words of Tony Bokhoven, fans were treated to a “Jim Dandy” of an event all evening long.
Sapulpa, OK’s Blake Hahn outdueled young gun Ryan Timms during American Bank of Oklahoma American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region feature action. Hahn chased Timms for the first 18 laps of the event, before pulling the trigger on a slider on lap 19 in turn three. Timms chased the No. 52 back down in traffic, attempting a last lap slider of his own to no avail. Dylan Westbrook, Jeremy Campbell, and Sean McClelland completed the top 5. In Alternative Pest Management USRA Modified action, Tyler Davis continued his red-hot start for 2022. Showing no signs of “injury” after and late race melee ended his top-10 King of America run just one week earlier, Davis quickly went to work dominating his heat race early in the evening. In A-feature action, Davis once again made quick work of the field, jumping out to the lead from his 3rd place starting spot on lap one.
Andy Bryant raised eyebrows during the Modified portion of the event, running second to Davis before the engine expired under the hood of the No. 49 with just a handful of laps to go. A late race restart set up tussle between Brendong Gemmill and Josh Lanterman, both trying to sneak by Davis’ Gerber Collision and Glass No. 65. Gemmill drove hard to the bottom of turn one with Lanterman just ahead. When Lanterman came down track the resulting contact sent both the No. 4A and No. G3 into a spin. No caution waved as both cars were able to keep rolling, allowing Davis to streak away over the course of the final two laps. Finishing in the runner up spot was the night’s hard charger Bryce Schniepp, while Paden Phillips, Brandon Givens, and Dalton Kirk completed the top five. Heat race wins went to Bryant, Givens, and Davis.
Prior to his night going sour with the Modified division, Andy Bryant put on a show during BSB Manufacturing USRA B-Mod competition. Starting sixth, Bryant methodically picked his way through the top five, putting himself in the runner up spot by lap 8. Over the next 8 laps of the event, Bryant tracked down early race leader Gabriel Hodges and completed the pass for the win with just four laps to go. At the checkers Hodges, Shadren Turner, Seth Schroer, and Travis Johnson completed the top five. Richard Wilson was the night’s hard charger going 23rd to 8th, with Schroer, Johnson, and Hodges all recording heat race wins.
After predicting himself the favorite to win the 2022 Autotech Service Super Stock Championship, Chris Purkey enjoyed a solid podium run during the Super Stock portion of the event, but it was all Rick Dunsworth’s night behind the wheel of the No. 4 machine. Dunsworth dominated the night’s A-feature event while David Blocher, Purkey, James Weve, and stock car regular Joey Richmond completed the top 5. Richmond also nabbed hard charger honors, while D. Blocher and Weve picked up the pair of heat race wins.
Up next at 81 Speedway the traveling Super Late Models of the Lucas Oil MLRA series open their 2022 campaign on April 8th and 9th. The first ever double header event at 81 Speedway under FOE Enterprises ownership has been dubbed the Heartland Hustle 40 presented by Strickland Road Service. A stout field of over 30 Super Late Model drivers are expected to be on hand for both nights of action. JLR Property Management Rookie Modifieds, Autotech Service Super Stocks and Midwest Wrap Co. IMCA Mod Lites join the Late Models on Friday night. The Midwest Wrap Co. IMCA Mod Lites and Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models return for night two along with the Alternative Pest Management USRA Modifieds and HeyGlassman.com Stock Cars.
