Matt Covington - Glenpool, OK. (March, 30th 2022) Matt Covington closed out the past weekend with a rebound after a disappointing Friday, earning his first podium of the 2022 season at I-30 speedway. The Lucas Oil ASCS National tour event resulted in a 23rd place finish on Friday, followed by a solid 3rd place finish on Saturday.
“It was a relief to get a finish we know our team is capable of,” stated Covington. “The car this year continues to give me confidence when it comes to setups and speed. We had to borrow a motor Saturday that had a different injection and setup on the throttle linkage than I am use to. So I lost some time getting used to the pedal stiffness and trying to hit my marks in the slick. But I got to thank Linda Howard for loaning us her motor while we’re in between shipments and getting our program back on track. She definitely saved us from another potential disaster.”
As mentioned, the weekend didn’t start off well on Friday. A flat tire in the heat race resulted in the loss of passing points and a B-main start. In an intense effort to make up lost ground, Covington ended up facing off with a tractor tire, which knocked the front end down. The consequences were a provisional start and a major mechanical issue, losing the only power plant Covington had left at the time.
“Friday night was just another night I’d like to never face again,” commented Matt. “I can promise you though, between me, Matthew, and the people who support this team, we are not giving up and will battle back. I made a mistake in the B-main that cost us point-wise, and then major mechanical issues dug us even deeper. But I know that as soon as we get these parts lined out, we’ll get back to the consistency expected of this team.”
With the cancellation of the ASCS National race in Jackson, the team is still trying to figure out where they will race on Friday and Saturday (Tulsa Speedway, 81??) or use the option to stay home and continue to work on things in the shop.
