DRUMRIGHT, Okla. (March 28, 2022) Following the opening four rounds of the 2022 season, American Sprint Car Series owner/director, Terry Mattox, has announced some tweaks to the rules that govern the National Tour of the American Sprint Car Series.
“Working through the first four races, it gave us a chance to see some of the changes in action and see what was going to work, and what needed to be changed or removed,” explained Mattox.
The biggest change will be the removal of using one right rear per night. Going forward, National and Regional events will follow the same rule and can change tires without penalty.
Section 9 – Tires and Wheels, rules 1 and 7.
1 Right Rear Hoosier Racing Tire, 105x16.0-15 Medium or 105/18.0-15 F85A. Tires may be Siped and Grooved.
7 Left rear must be a Hoosier Tire
During National Tour events, Qualifying will remain in groups but will be split with a maximum of five cars on track per timed session. Ties in overall Qualifying and Heat Race Passing Points will also now be broken by time, not Heat Race order. The rules also include a better clarification of what happens to a driver’s qualifying and passing points should they fail to qualify or miss their group.
Section 2 – National Tour Qualifying Procedures, rules 2, 3, 4, and 6
2 Teams will Hot Lap to help run the track in. Immediately upon the completion of the final set of Hot Laps, Qualifying will begin. Groups will split into two sessions containing only drivers from that group.
3 Cars will get 1 warm-up lap, followed by 3 laps on the clock to determine their fastest time. Anyone missing their group will only receive one timed lap once all other groups have completed their Qualifying. Best Heat Race starting position if you miss your assigned group will be fifth, and you will receive only finishing points in your Heat Race.
4 Points will be awarded in each group with the fastest Qualifier receiving 20 points. The scale per position is (20, 16, 13, 10, 9, 8, 7 6, 5, 4). If you fail to establish a time, you will not receive qualifying points, and only finishing points in your Heat Race.
6 Passing Points will be used during the Heat Race. Points are done from the final parade lap and will be combined with the points earned during Qualifying. Any tie in overall points will be broken by the driver's qualifying time. Top 16 in overall points will lock into the A-Feature. An inversion will be determined by draw of a 0 (Straight-up), 2 (top two rows), or 3 (top three rows). Draw will be done by the high point earner.
On the changes, Terry said, “One of those deals where an idea sounds good, but doesn’t work out as you wanted it to, and seeing things that needed to be adjusted based on what we are doing now. I appreciate the positive and constructive criticism from those racing with us and working with us to help make the sport, and the series better.”
The next event for the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series is the $10,000 to win, Capital City Clash at Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss. on Friday, April 1, and Saturday, April 2. Tickets are on sale at http://www.ascsracing.com/schedule.
