Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (March 17, 2022) – Dominic Scelzi produced a seventh-place showing while competing with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series last Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway.

More impressively, Scelzi led laps of a World of Outlaws main event for the first time in his career prior to garnering his 28th career top 10 with ‘The Greatest Show on Dirt.’

“I feel you have to lose a World of Outlaws race before you can win one,” he said. “We were fast, but got too free as the race went on. At the end of the day we led laps and we were in contention. We know what the difference would have been to keep us in contention at the end of the race so that’s a huge confidence boost for our team.”

Scelzi qualified eighth quickest out of the 32 competitors to garner a front row starting position in a heat race. He led the distance to score the victory, which locked him into the dash. Scelzi finished where he started – third – in the dash to line up on the inside of the second row in the A Main.

“We went out early in qualifying and our time held up to put us in a good position,” he said. “We had a strong start to the heat race and then did well in the dash, which set us up well for the A Main.”

Scelzi quickly advanced into the runner-up position and tracked down the leader. He capitalized on a double-file restart on Lap 10 by rocketing into the lead and he held the point for nine laps.

“I felt really good early and was able to run the bottom,” he said. “As the race went on we got more and more free. Then when I fell to third I started searching around the track and that cost me more speed. We ended up dropping to seventh, but I’m extremely proud of our run and I know it’s something we will build on.”

Scelzi also competed in a 360ci winged sprint car that evening, setting quick time in qualifying, advancing from fourth to third in a heat race and rallying from fifth to a second-place result in the main event.

“The track was really hard to pass on for most of the feature,” he said. “I ran fifth for awhile and then got to fourth. Once the track widened out a little we got right to second and closed in on the leader. We were about side by side in turns three and four on the last lap, but I wasn’t close enough to try a slide job so we finished second by a couple tenths of a second.”

The weekend began on Friday at Thunderbowl Raceway, where Scelzi qualified 21st quickest, ended sixth in a heat race, placed third in the Last Chance Showdown and settled for 23rd in the main event.

“We were a little off with our balance all night,” he said. “We were too tight and I ended up pulling off the track during the feature since we were struggling. It was great to watch my brother win the race so that made it a great night.”

Scelzi plans on joining the World of Outlaws this Friday at Merced Speedway in Merced, Calif., and Saturday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., during the Ocean Outlaw Showdown.
