(Bill W) March 5, 2012 – It’s only the first weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series, but Brady Bacon can say he is the point leader after two nights. A pair of second place finishes at Canyon Speedway Park near Peoria, Arizona has him in that position. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver and the rest of the series head to Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, Arizona Friday and Saturday.
The Brady Bacon Racing #99 team was fortunate to have some practice time Thursday night at Canyon. “We had a leak in the oil line and we had a hard time finding it,” says Brady. “I also had a wing valve issue, but luckily, they happened on practice night and we got that stuff out of the way.”
Friday’s prelim saw a fairly uneventful heat for Brady, who ran third. It was enough to qualify for the preliminary feature. “We passed one car on the start, and it really was single-file from there,” he says. “Fortunately, it was enough to sneak in the feature and we didn’t have to run the B or anything. It was a tough field. There were 35 cars there, but 20-25 could have easily won the feature.”
A start inside of row eight did not deter Brady, who is trying to improve on this third place point standing with ASCS in 2011. “The car was almost perfect,” he says. “We were passing two or three cars a lap there for the first part of the race. We were really able to stay low in one and two, when everyone else seemed a little tight and drifting off of two. We made most of our time up coming off of two.”
Brady’s charge got him into the top three. “Once we got to third, I was struggling with Danny Wood a little bit,” he says. “Once I finally got by him, we got to (leader) Tony Bruce and he was pretty good. I would catch him a little bit and gain two car lengths in one and two. He would gain a car length in three and four, so it was slow trying to catch him.”
Time ran out on the bid for a win, and Brady would settle for runner-up honors. “We took the white and ran well in one and two,” he says of the last lap. “I went ahead and tried the top in three and four to see if I had enough to get by. We actually gained several car lengths on him, but not enough to get by. I wish I would have tried that a lap earlier. We may have had something for him.”
The second place finish locked him into Saturday’s 30-lap finale. “It’s definitely a big plus when you can show up, hot lap, draw, and race the feature,” says Brady. “The track was narrow again in the heats, but that wasn’t something we had to worry about.”
Starting fifth, Brady wasted little time moving forward. This time, he was trying to track down leader, Jason Johnson. “We were good in the feature again,” he says. “Jason and I were pretty equal. It was pretty greasy on the bottom, especially in three and four, but I could get through there pretty well if I hit it right.”
Brady ran well, holding onto second at the checkers and seized the point lead heading to Yuma this weekend. “Jason made some mistakes, but so did I,” he says. “He was able to stay ahead of us. I was able to get beside him a couple of times in lapped traffic, but he shut the door on us. We just weren’t quite able to get around him.”
It was a great beginning to the first full season as a car owner/driver. “We had a super-good car and a super-good start to the year,” says Brady. “We have a lot better start than last year when we finished eleventh and eleventh (in the opener). Infinity Shocks had me exactly where I wanted to be last weekend. I am really excited about that. We’re just going to keep our basic stuff going, and hopefully, be strong the whole year starting with Yuma this weekend.”
