Inside Line Promotions – HAUBSTADT, Ind. (May 15, 2018) – Progress was made last weekend for Kevin Swindell Racing and driver Spencer Bayston, who tackled a World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series doubleheader at Eldora Speedway.

The Swindell Speed Lab backed team kicked off the action on Friday by qualifying fifth quickest around the half-mile oval. Bayston then finished fourth in a heat race to lock into the 13th starting position for the A Main.

“Our qualifying has been good,” Swindell said. “Essentially, we’ve been there twice in the past and were in the B Main. Just getting in the race was good for us. The only time I’ve run a feature there it was with my dad and that was different overall.

“We just missed it with the setup in the main event. We were good until we filled it with fuel. Spencer got it going better at the end, but by that time we were too far behind.”

Bayston finished the race 20th, but gained confidence on the tricky track.

“It’s much more difficult than any other track we run,” he said. “Everyone has good stuff and good setups. To compete with them you have to have your stuff on kill and the driver has to make good moves. If you make one hiccup you’ll get eaten alive. Learning how to handle restarts and how to handle cars around you without making mistakes is crucial.”

Bayston and the team made even more gains on Saturday, qualifying 16th quickest overall and placing fourth in a heat race. That started him on the outside of the eighth row for the A Main.

“We missed by just a hair in qualifying trying to figure out how to get better,” Swindell said. “The heat race was pretty good and probably halfway through the main event Spencer was comfortable at Eldora with running the wall and everything you need. That was what we were trying to get out of this weekend. The main goal was to try to do that and get our balance better.”

Bayston was running in the top 15 for most of the race before a slight collision with the wall resulted in a DNF.

“Going into the weekend we didn’t have a whole lot of expectations because we haven’t ran it a whole lot,” he said. “By the end of the weekend the results didn’t show how I felt and how the team felt the weekend went. After that second night I was ready to restart the weekend because I got comfortable and confident. I could relay better information to Kevin and the car got better throughout the weekend.

“We have a little bit of a base to go off and I know what to expect going back there. I’d say confidence isn’t at an all-time high, but I have more confidence going back there now.”

The weekend wrapped up with a World of Outlaws event at Tri-State Speedway on Sunday. Unfortunately, a crash during qualifying ended the night early for Swindell and Bayston.

The team will likely take this weekend off before returning to action with a busy Memorial Day Weekend, featuring races on May 25 at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio; May 26 at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio; and May 27 at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio, with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions and May 28 at Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind., with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
