EL PASO, Texas (September 29, 2016) The weekend started off strong for John Carney II at the Hockett/McMillin Memorial, as Carney piloted the Lubbock Wrecker/MVT No. 11x to a third place finish for John’s 24th top-five run of the season, but things would quickly turn south for the Texas shoe.
“Thursday was great. The car was rolling good, things just didn’t pan out the next two nights,” said Carney. Taking second in Heat Race and Qualifier competition on Friday night, Carney made the cut for the A-Feature with a 15th place starting spot.
“The track had a little bit more moisture in it than Thursday, and we made changes to compensate, but the car just wasn’t digging into the track like it needed, and we ended up tagging the wall about five laps in so that broke the Jacobs Ladder. At that point it was just a matter of staying out and collecting points for Saturday.”
Staying out proved effective for John who made the top-eight to lock into Saturday night but the night would end on the hook.
“We backed up a touch on the start after they worked the track, but it started coming to us. The car was actually really good and we were running fifth, but on one of the restarts, I didn’t compensate for the bleeder and I just went in to close to Wayne [Johnson]. When I did that, I didn’t have enough air going across the wing and hit the hole going into one. It bounced right over the cushion and into the marbles. Once it did that, I couldn’t keep it off the wall.”
With car, parts, and pieces back in place, John will turn his attention to the Casey’s General Stores Fall Brawl at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb. on Saturday, October 1 with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series. Having seen action in 2006 at the high banked, four-tenths mile oval, Carney’s last stop was a 360cid/305cid show.
“I’m looking forward to getting back to I-80 and just have to thank Scott Brown and my whole crew for all their hard work.”
