Inside Line Promotions – BECHTELSVILLE, Pa. (Aug. 2, 2016) – A blown radiator hose may have cost Ryan Smith his first win of the season a week ago Tuesday.
Smith was leading the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series feature at Grandview Speedway when a red flag came out. As he coasted to a stop, Smith saw water spewing out of his Warko Group machine.
“If it wasn’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all,” he said. “I definitely had the car to beat … we were going to win. I don’t know if we had a water pump go bad or blew a head gasket, but it blew the hose right off. It was a hot night and we ran a make-up feature, qualified, ran a heat and then another feature and the engine really didn’t have time to cool down. I won’t know what happened until we go through the motor.
“The encouraging thing is we made big changes from the first feature to the second and the car was very good.”
Smith had finished 13th during the make-up feature before he qualified fourth quickest and ended third in a heat race. He had taken advantage of drawing the pole position by leading the main event before the problem that relegated him to an 18th-place result.
Smith plans to get back racing this Saturday at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa.
“We may go to Williams Grove Friday, but we’re not quite sure yet,” he said. “We are still looking at going to the Knoxville Nationals next week. We just have to have everything fall into place. I really want to go to Knoxville, but we are still a small team. We’re trying to get a tow vehicle lined up. We have the racing equipment, but we need a truck to tow us out and some crew help.”
