Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 1, 2016) – Trey Starks made his first visit to Knoxville Raceway in approximately two years last Saturday during a National Sprint League event.
“I’d say it served its purpose,” he said. “We were really good in qualifying, which is good because that’s a big part of the (Knoxville) Nationals. We were pretty good right out of the gate. As the night went on we were a little off. I hadn’t been there in a while and Jeff hadn’t been there in a while. We knew we’d learn some things the first time out.”
Starks and car owner Jeff McCall used the race as a test session prior to the Capitani Classic, which the duo will compete in this Sunday, and next week’s Knoxville Nationals.
“We know where to start with qualifying,” he said. “A lot of the good cars you’ll have to beat at the Nationals were there last Saturday.”
Starks kicked off the event by qualifying third quickest. He then advanced from sixth to fifth place in a heat race, which lined him up on the inside of the third row for the main event.
“We had some problems in the main, but we know exactly what they are and we know how to fix it,” he said. “I couldn’t drive it straight. It’d get to the middle of the corner and start bouncing.”
Starks spent the first half of the race in the top 10 before fading to a 14th-place result.
He and McCall will get one final race at the half-mile oval before the Knoxville Nationals this Sunday when they return for the Capitani Classic, which annually draws 75-plus competitors.
“Hopefully we’ll take another step forward and learn more on Sunday so we can be dialed in heading into the Nationals,” Starks said.
