Inside Line Promotions – PAIGE, Texas (July 27, 2016) – It didn’t take long for Tommy Bryant to “knock the rust off” after having more than a month away from racing.
Bryant and the SawBlade.com backed Cooper Motorsports team competed in a pair of ASCS Gulf South Region events last weekend and they garnered a second-place result at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, and a third-place finish at Cotton Bowl Speedway.
“For being off as long as we were I was very pleased with the results,” Bryant said. “We were fast all weekend. Brad Benic really has the car dialed in. On Friday in Waco we had a car that could have won. I’m just starting too far back … it’s the luck of the draw I guess. If you don’t draw a pill for the front couple of rows you have to make up a lot of time in a hurry.
“Hats off to my crew guy Austin. We crashed in the heat, bent the right rear wheel and Jacob’s Ladder, and he busted his tail to get the car ready to go.”
Bryant advanced from seventh to third place in a heat race to make the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 7 to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row. However, he overcame the high pill draw to earn the runner-up result.
Bryant passed some pretty stiff competition at Cotton Bowl Speedway the following night. He won a heat race to make the feature redraw only to pull the highest number – eight – during the random redraw.
“Again, bad pill draws hurt us,” he said. “In the feature we got to second and the caution came out and it put us back to fifth. We got back to third and ran out of time. You just can’t give someone like (Channin) Tankersley that big of an advantage.”
Bryant, whose third-place result was his ninth top five of the season, will have a couple of weeks off once again before taking on the remaining five ASCS Gulf South Region events in 2016.
“We’re going to get the engine freshened and make a big run at the ASCS Gulf South championship,” he said. “We’re kicking around the idea of going to the Short Track Nationals and maybe Devil’s Bowl and a few other races as well.”
Bryant is currently second in the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings.
“I want to thank my wife, Tracy, for putting up with all this and allowing me to go have some fun,” Bryant said.
