Inside Line Promotions – PLACERVILLE, Calif. (May 10, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi took advantage of a late decision on Saturday to earn a podium finish at Placerville Speedway.
Scelzi had planned on making his debut driving for the Van Lare Family at the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series event at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma, Calif., but the race was rained out that afternoon.
“After Petaluma rained out we were pretty bummed and found out that Placerville was still racing,” he said. “We changed engines as quickly as we could and hauled to Placerville. It was a last-minute deal and it went really well. I was really happy with how everything went and was thankful for the opportunity.”
Scelzi opened the event by qualifying sixth quickest.
“In hot laps the track was greasy so I was lucky enough to get two sessions,” he said. “When we went out for qualifying turns one and two were really technical. A lot of guys were struggling. When we went out we set quick time and we ended up sixth quick, which was good.”
Scelzi then advanced from third to win a heat race to lock himself into the feature redraw.
“We went into the first corner and the car in fourth went off the track, which caused a yellow,” he said. “When we were slowing down the leaders got together and the second-place guy flew off the track so that moved me up from third to second. On the restart I was able to take the lead and win the heat.”
Scelzi redrew the No. 6 during the random redraw to start the 25-lap main event on the outside of the third row.
“We were extremely fast,” he said. “We got into fifth around Lap 4 or 5. Then we got into fourth and had a restart on Lap 15. I went from fourth to second and reeled in the leader with a few laps to go. I got under him in turns three and four in lapped traffic. Going into turn one on Lap 23 he went low and I made a late decision to go high. I got into the cushion and that messed me up. I lost the battle for the lead and second place.”
Scelzi ended with a third-place result, which marked his third top five of the season.
