The National Sprint League season is officially underway, and the TKS Motorsports #2KS team and driver Craig Dollansky registered a third place finish at I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska on Friday. The track played host to a Dirt Classic Qualifier and drew a strong field of cars. The team returned to Knoxville Raceway on Saturday and recorded another top ten there.
TKS Motorsports owner Troy Renfro was excited to be back at I-80 Speedway Friday.
“They do such a great job at that track,” he says. “The Kosiski’s are great people, and they do things right. Phil Durst is such a great guy, and he’s been involved in the sport for so many years.”
The Dirt Classic ran time trials, and then lined up heats by time. A second set of heats was run, but was totally inverted. Feature positions were based on points. “It’s a great facility,” says Troy. “I’ve always enjoyed that track, and I’ve been going there since it was built. I don’t think the teams we’ve had have ever run badly there. I really liked the format they ran with the two heats. It’s great for the fans. It makes it exciting and they get to see a little more racing. It’s all about the points. I don’t know if it would work all the time, but it was great for that night.”
Dollansky timed in sixth quick, and ran second and fourth in his heats. “It was a good night,” says Troy. “It was our third race, and we made some changes from the previous week that seemed to help there. We know I-80 is abrasive on tires and it’s fast, so with the two heats, I took some used left rears that I had. I like the NSL rule that you can change to a used tire after qualifying. It saves your tire for the feature. At some places, that is a real issue.”
The team made some changes for the second heat. “We started in the back of the second set, and we threw a few things at the car to try and make the bottom work,” says Troy. “We weren’t bad. We changed a couple of little things for the feature.”
The car worked well. Though Terry McCarl was the class of the field, the #2KS was in contention, battling with Brian Brown, Danny Lasoski and Dale Blaney before finishing a solid third at the checkers. “We were happy to run third,” says Troy. “There wasn’t anyone there that was going to beat Terry. He was just that good. Once we got past our battles with Lasoski and Dale, we kind of got away from them. We could have been a little bit better, but I was happy with the changes we made to get better. The motor ran great.”
It was on to Knoxville Saturday. “We wanted to work on some of the problems we had the second night,” says Troy. “We were pretty good the first night, but we were off a bit the second night. We have no excuses. We timed in 14th, which is definitely better than we were last year, but not where we need to be.”
Craig rebounded to run second in the heat, and climb from 14th to ninth in the feature. “Once we figured out what was happening, we made some changes and we were good in the heat,” says Troy. “In the feature, we passed a few cars and got into the top ten. We need to find a better balance with the car for Craig. The motor is running great. We’re just a little off with the car and need to find that balance. We’ll keep working at it, and get better on Saturday.”
