Wednesdays with Wayne – On the Road with the Outlaws!
(Bill W) April 27, 2016 – Wayne Johnson spent three nights with the World of Outlaws this week. The outings were highlighted by a run from 20th to eighth at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas on Saturday. This weekend, the Oklahoma City driver hopes to run with the WoO in his home state on the Salina Highbanks Friday before competing in weekly competition at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa on Saturday.
The WoO started with two nights at Devil’s Bowl Friday and Saturday. Friday was a struggle for the Two-C Racing team. “The mechanic, which is me, did a horrible job,” says Wayne. “I put the wrong jet in and the motor wouldn’t run. We didn’t find it until after qualifying on Saturday. We got better and better after that.”
After qualifying through Saturday’s B, Wayne started 20th and charged to eighth. “We were decent, but our car still wasn’t where it needs to be,” he says. “To be able to drive by some of those guys, I knew they definitely weren’t set up.”
He would actually climb as high as sixth. “We were able to get by (Jason) Sides and (Brad) Sweet late in the race for sixth,” says Wayne. “But the caution came out and we had to get back in eighth. We were happy to run there, especially with how the car felt and from where we started.”
Last night, the WoO made their first trip to I-30 Speedway near Little Rock in many years. Qualifying is paramount with the Outlaws, and Wayne was 24th quick. “We went in the wrong direction in qualifying,” he says. “We hit the wrong part of the track in three and four. When you don’t qualify well, you’re behind the 8-ball.”
He would go from eight to sixth in his heat, before pulling off in the feature. “The car really ran o.k. in the heat and the feature,” says Wayne. “We just aren’t where we need to be with the 410 yet. We’re just a little off. I’m still trying to get the balance on the car.”
