Inside Line Promotions – SELINSGROVE, Pa. (April 26, 2016) – Caleb Helms capped last weekend with a top 20 during his debut at Selinsgrove Speedway.
Helms opened the Ray Tilley Classic featuring the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions on Sunday by qualifying 20th quickest overall. That missed the heat race inversion and lined Helms up behind several of the top stars of the series.
“We had a pretty stacked heat race,” he said. “I got by (Lucas) Wolfe, (Dale) Blaney and (Sheldon) Haudenschild on the start, but Wolfe and Blaney got me back on the next corner. I was able to stay in front of Sheldon and stay in a transfer spot.”
Helms finished fifth in the heat race to lock into the main event, which he started 19th.
“We were really good and hitting our stride about halfway through the race when a red came out,” he said. “We made some changes on the car and it wasn’t the same at all. I fell back a few more spots.”
Helms held on for a 17th-place result.
The weekend began on Saturday at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., where the All Stars tackled the inaugural Keith Kauffman Classic.
Unfortunately, Helms battled a fuel problem early in the night, which put him behind the eight ball.
“A nozzle line backed off during the heat race,” he said. “It was running really bad. It would have hurt the motor to keep going so I pulled in early. Plus, it was getting fuel in the cockpit.”
Helms was unable to finish the heat race, which relegated him into the fifth starting position in the B Main.
“I hadn’t run many laps so I was trying to get used to what the track was like,” he said. “By the end of the race we started running some good laps, but it took too long to get there.”
Helms placed 10th in the consolation race.
He is scheduled to return to competition this Saturday at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio, with the All Stars.
